Generally speaking, it is MUCH easier to go JAA to FAA. I am assuming that this is for more than just a hobby...since it is possible to convert to a restricted US PPL without any tests...just a visit to the FAA and some paperwork.

For a certificate other than a PPL (or for an unrestricted PPL) you must have accomplished all of the experience required for whatever FAA certificate you want...PPL, CPL, ATP etc. For example, you will need all the required hours and cross country time, night experience etc. You can access this information at http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=27c2d72927e4182e45fee361836f3180&tp l=/ecfrbrowse/Title14/14cfr61_main_02.tpl (http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=27c2d72927e4182e45fee361836f3180&tpl=/ecfrbrowse/Title14/14cfr61_main_02.tpl)

Part 61 details all the time you will need. There are also definitions of cross country, night...I think that they are different that JAA definitions. If you are an experienced pilot, you should have all the time required. If not, either get it now or you can get it in the USA.

You will also need to pass the applicable written test...which is much easier than the JAA ones. All multiple choice, 70% pass mark, and 80 questions or less (depending upon the test).

Good luck...and try to convince the JAA to make converting the other way this easy!!!:*
