Can an airline place a restriction on your passport and effectively ban you from entering certain countries?

Forgive me, but this is a strange question and needs more elaboration.
Airlines can refuse to carry you into a country based on your passport. However, they do not endorse your passport so you are free to try another means of entering a country, perhaps by buss or maybe even another airline.

I think the answer is No, but they do have a very clear responsibility to ensure that you have the right documents to travel to a particular country, as they may be faced with fines at the destination in the event of an immigration rejection and costs of carrying the passenger back to origin.
Depending on the country, the answer may be YES.....
But you really have to post more details in order to get a specific answer.
