Just a quick background about me, I'm a pilot of with a CPL/IR, recently got a job in Africa about 6months ago, so had to relocate from the UK to Afica. But I still have the intention of coming back to the UK to work as a pilot.

A cousin of mine works for the British Police and found out some how that one of my distant relatives(who has always been a mischievious individual from start) convicted for a crime(I believe it was attempted rape) had used my name instead of his own name. Now this puts me in serious trouble. I dont know how or where this guy would have picked up details about me, but he had all my details.

How do I go about clearing my name. My cousin said the database he looked at had a photo and a finger print of this distant relative so i'm really hoping that when ever I get a chance to come back to the UK, that would be the main evidence I have of prooving myself. Are there any other things I can do for the time being to get things in motion.

I really dont want to make it obvious to the authorities that it was my cousin in the Met who helped me find out this info so as not to jeopardize his job in anyway, but I have to clear my name some how if I ever intend to work as a pilot bcos this sort of identity theft can ruin my desire to fly in the UK. I am really interested to hear from any victims of identity theft, current or ex-Police officers, actually anyone who could offer me good advice.

If you are on the level, I know someone who might be able to help you. Not free of charge mind you, this kind of thing is his job. He used to have a good position in the MET, so he might have some useful contacts. If you are interested, PM me.
