With reference to the recentley introduced Type A & B SIDs and STARs in the USA, could anybody give their understanding in relation to this part of the FAA Charting Notice -
"Pilots must use a CDI, flight director, and/or autopilot, in lateral navigation mode, for flight guidance while operating on RNAV paths (track, course, or direct leg). Other methods providing an equivalent level of performance may be acceptable."
- as to whether an Autopilot is required to fly a type B SID or5 STAR or is it not mandatory?
Thanks

This is FAA speak. They are trying to say you need EITHER a flight director or autopilot. If they just said “or” instead of “and/or”, some twit would argue that you could not have the flight director display up if you were using the autopilot.

Thanks 742. That's what I thought. Looks like the lawyers got involved.
