AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- An Iberia Airlines flight bound for Madrid returned to Amsterdam's airport Friday after a passenger claimed to have a bomb, and the man was arrested soon after landing, authorities said.

An official at Schiphol airport said the plane's crew subdued a man in the rear of the aircraft, and customs police with drawn weapons arrested him. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Iberia Flight 3251, carrying 156 passengers, had just taken off when a passenger said he was going to detonate a bomb if the plane did not return to Amsterdam, according to an airline spokeswoman in Madrid who spoke on condition of anonymity because she is not authorized to give her name.

The plane returned and the passengers were evacuated via emergency slides. No bomb was found aboard the plane, Justice Ministry spokesman Wim Kom told the Associated Press.

Police arrested the man, apparently without resistance, and searched the plane for explosives.

The aircraft, with its slides down, was visible from the terminal.

The TV report said emergency procedures were automatically put into motion, and passengers were evacuated quickly. Police with dogs searched the plane.
