Just out of interest a few questions on crew rest. Over how many hours would a flight need to be to carry a S/O. If it was say flights over 8 hours and a flight was 8.45 would you stil carry a S/O. Any feedback would be great cheers.

In the US, a 3rd Pilot (or Flight Engineer) is needed for any flight over 8 hours, and a 4th for any flight over 12.

For example, a 744 (2-Pilot basic crew) carries 3 Pilots for flights 8-12 hours long, and 4 Pilots for flights over 12 hours. A 747 Classic (2 Pilots + 1 FE basic crew) carries a 3rd Pilot and 2nd FE for flights over 12 hours.

Note that these are only for Alaska/Hawaii/international flights, because only 8 hours per day is allowed for domestic (lower 48 states) flights.
