Oh what a tangled web OAC weaves when first they practice to deceive. I think their bid to steal seniority is going to blow up in their face this summer if not sooner.

According to today's news, even the Liberal Party has embarked on a "truth and reconciliation misson", aimed at putting their fractured party back together. Ex-Cretien and -Martin types are expected to bury the hatchet for the common good of the party going into the leadership convention. The party's new blood will have a say in the process, as well will the senior members not identified with either faction.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but you need to watch the Liberals and learn!! :D :D :{ :{ :{

Can you blame the OAC pilots? I mean they really took some abuse by the looks of it. How does this so called Canada Labour Board get away with this kind of crap anyway?
You boys and girls in Canada are need of some serious government accountability!

As someone on the outside looking in I'm sure I'm missing something but what was wrong with date of hire? There is talk of RELATIVE seniority but I'm not sure what that has to do with anything. I was under the impression the seniority was based on your years of service. If you had 15 yrs of service then you were senior to someone with 14yrs. Is there anyone on the list (OAC or OCP) who is now junior to someone with fewer years of service? (By years of service I mean based on their date of hire at their respective companies, either CDN or AC) I'm not trying to stir the pot on this very touchy subject, just trying to get a better feel for whats going on.

The latest arbitrated merged seniority list was not done date of hire.

Canadian Airlines had a stagnant growth period for many years and Air Canada had rapid growth in the 90's.

As a result, years of service (date of hire) at each airline meant very different equipment and pay for most pilots. An attempt was made to take this into account and merge "likes with likes"

In the end the lists were merged in a variable ratio. This resuted in nearly date of hire for some pilots but most Canadian Airlines pilots are now in relative seniority with Air Canada pilots who were hired many years later.

You can see how it all looks right here...........

Most original Air Canada pilots are still not happy. There are many factors which contribute to their unhappiness.

1) The first arbitrator gave more relative seniority to the original AC pilots. It was appealed and the second arbitrator took some of it back.

2) The downturn and layoffs of 1993. Many original AC ended up losing status.

3) Their merger commitee gave them false high hopes. They recently tried to ammend the list themselves by hiring a meadiator to create a new "more fair" list. Problem is the CAIL pilots refused to participate and of course it was rejected by the Labour Board.

4) They don't realize that most Canadian Airlines pilots are older and will retire soon leaving behind many good jobs for many years to come.
