"If you can slip in to SAA, get a decent type rating and some experience, and then go somewhere else while the SA licence is still well regarded. Remember the scandal a while back about licences for sale ? How much longer until your CPL/ATPL has the same status as a Nigerian one ?"

Metro Man,
What has the Nigerian CPL got to do with what you guys are talking about. For a start, most Nigerian Pilots have licenses from other countries, including SA (most only now come there because its harder to get US visa). Most of us in Nigeria know you guys in SA to be as racist as ever. I personally have observed all threads about SAA, and am always amazed at the racist comments. Most of us were glad Vigin was invited to be our Flag carrier, and you demostrated this to OBJ, before he kicked you lot out.

Quote:
"Getting back to my original point - OUR national carrier is in a difficult situation. They need crew! The supply of suitably qualified black pilots has been exhausted. Yet they are still being prevented from hiring experienced white South Africans. Would you prefer to see non-South Africans fulfill the necessary slots, in order to obtain your colour quota? Nigerians etc? "

Julliet-Echo,
Whats wrong with Nigerians coming in to fill the quota. We have a lot of SA guys flying in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. They are even paid more because of thier skin colour. I keep on telling guys here in Nigeria, I have lived amongst you people and I know your reasoning process. Africa is not made for SA whites pilots only, thank God people are starting to see that. Learn to accommodate the other Africans. If you feel you are not African then leave. We will learn our to govern ourselves. Europe was not build in a day, think about all the wars that was fought. We will get there.

Oba, Nigeria has a reputation for corruption, along with fraud and drug trafficking. In the first world the mere mention of anything Nigerian rings alarm bells. Would you trust a letter of credit (supposedly) issued by a Nigerian bank for example ?

Bribery, or "dash" as you call it is ingrained in your culture to the extent were it is impossible to operate in Nigeria without it. This rightly raises the question of the integrity of your licencing system. How much for a peek at the ATPL exam papers ? To pass a flight test ? Even a complete licence issued on the strength of a forged foreign one.

And you wonder why Nigerian Airlines are banned from much of the worlds airspace.

I saw the transformation of Air Zimbabwe from an all white pilot group, to a mixed pilot group, to a now virtually all black pilot group.

Some of the issues worth mentioning were:

1. A group of black pilots (and one token white) were issued with ATPLs on the basis of a ministerial directive. They couldn't pass the exams which were based on the British system. Later on FAA ATPs became eligable for conversion so problem solved. Note the licencing officer T.W. a man of integrity resigned over this.

2. Senior training captain summoned to Prime Ministers office and accused of racism for not passing a black pilot as captain. Training captain sneekily failed an engine after take off and was treated to a close look at the control tower for his trouble.

This is the sort of thing SAA has to look foward to, if it's not happening already.

The Zimbabwe licence used to be highly regarded, and many pilots got jobs with Cathay, Australian Airlines, Singapore, Gulf Air etc .

With the large population base in Nigeria, there will obviously be some talented pilots in there. Provided he or she has a licence from a country were they can't be bought, such as Canada, New Zealand, UK etc, and is flying for an airline not under pressure to promote on race regardless of ability then I will happily fly with him/her.

Unfortunately blacks have shown themselves unable to successfully run a country, with one or two exceptions such as Botswana. Why does most of Nigeria's population live in poverty when it has vast oil wealth ? I am not a racist just a realist. In my new job I am going to be working for non whites (Singaporeans), now these people do impress me with their ability to run a country and an airline.

I used to live in Africa, saw the writing on the wall and got out thank God.

..... know you guys in SA to be as racist as ever.

A bit of a sweeping statement!

Really not nice to say things like that. I'm sure you would'nt like it if I said all Nigerians are either corrupt or drug dealers or both.

Well left to you, blacks should never rule any country. You guys in South Africa (wont like to generalise) will rather come and do it for us, wont you. Thank God this Apartheid thing was stop, its this damage the guys (SA government) are trying to put right. Am sure since your are convinced blacks are stupid, you will have been looking at conquering the whole of Africa by now. Then you will be able to fly their planes around, be worshiped by the blacks guys and be treated as God by the black guys (you ****).

I don’t see your point regarding credit cards and frauds on this thread. That is another issue entirely, which if we go into, then I will blame the guys that have fallen victims. Let me give you some explanation regarding this so called fraud. There is always someone who has come across some millions (illegally) that needs to be ferried across to some banks in Europe or somewhere. In some cases this is genuine and not in others. You get to hear about the cases that are not. I will say, why help transfer money from a poor nation outside the country, if you get scammed and complain, you should be thrown in Jail (Beheaded if I was the president)?

With regards to Nigerian licensing, then you are talking with your ass wide open on this one. For a start, Nigeria does not in itself issue ATPL (CPL, yes, after you have spent donkey years at Zaria). You go to a country like the UK, US, Canada or even SA, get your ATPL there, then it gets converted to a Nigerian ATPL. What ATPL exams are you talking about anyway.

Can you also please enlighten us on the airspace Nigerian airlines have been banned from operating. Bellview Airlines stills fly into London and India on Nigerian registered planes. Very soon, Virgin Nigeria will be de-registered and will be flying everywhere with Nigerian crew including the US (one the DOT agreements has been sorted out). Afri Air has the right to fly into Spain from Nigeria, and are in the process getting a A330 or B767 (to be Nigerian Registered) for this operation. ADC also has the right to fly into Brussels, again from Nigeria. What are you talking about men. Have you flown with Nigerian pilots ? They are everywhere, middle-east, SA, British Airways, KLM, Easyjet, Ryanair, Das etc.

I can not comment on Air Zim, but I hope one of the guys working over there can at least come up on this forum and say something. I know there will be two sides to the stories. I wont be surprise, if people with your ideas are the ones behind the downfall. If you believe you are African, why run away to Singapore, stay here in Africa and help change it.

With regards to Nigeria, being ridden with poverty, I cant dispute that, but it will change. The government is doing something about corruption, governors are arrested left / right and centre. Things are getting better, and we are here to put in our own quota. We will get there, Europe and America went through the same thing. We will survive.

I see this is going to take a lot of patience and the extensive use of illustrations.

P.S. oba - I will type real slow when I reply again. And I appologise in advance - it really is unfair to get involved in a battle of wits with an opponent that is obviously unarmed.

Guys,
You know what really amazes me about the south 'african' whites is their ability to blend.
When the going gets tough, they quickly remember the colour of their skin!
When its all good they say they are proud to be african!
Well, gentlemen, i have news for you. There is a movement going on right now for africa to be reclaimed by africans:) !! Your stay on our continent has come to an end. I must remind you, that neither the english nor americans will accept to harbour you lot.
It may be wise to start making arrangements in Holland or Germany where you freaky lot came from, for your final re-absorbtion into society.
What Mobutu is doing will be a complete joke when the revolution bursts open.
You lot are no more intellingent than a bunch of Dingoes,
I shall see your faces on your judgement day!!!
Its time to run boys, just thought as collegues, you should have a head start.

Things are really starting to get real ugly now here on pprune. I think our former president had a really good vision for South Africa and perhaps that's a model that should exist in the rest of the world.

The only problem with his vision is that it will not work if it comes ftom the side of the blacks only because we are starting from nowhere and over night we are supposed to be equal with whites who have had an unfair advantage over years. The whites are still too happy to see us suffer and being second class citizens in our indigenous country.

Anyone who tries to talk sense about issues of national socio-economic interest is crushed, I think they like what happened in Zimbabwe and some African countries. And then they leave a mess of poverty, civil wars and later claim Africans cannot govern themselves after they have raped that country with all their precious materials.

IN SA there's still lots of cream for them and they will not leave just yet. Remember when the going gets tough, the white man departs to cash in on their offshore investments.

Unfortunately blacks have shown themselves unable to successfully run a country, with one or two exceptions such as Botswana. Dear ole dear. Can I make a suggestion here to the black pilots. Please try not to get yourselves too wound up by these racists who come on pprune to vent their frustrations at everything to do with black people. A leopard doesn't change its spots. You'll have to understand that this generation of guys where brought to believe that the black person needs to stepped on at every oppurtunity.
Even though apartheid officially ended some time ago, it really doesn't show when you read some comments on pprunes african forum. And the really sad thing is that they dont see anything wrong with the kind of views they hold. To an extent I really do feel sorry for them(and thats the truth) because they feel very conered. Its like a spoilt child who's used to having everything done for them at the expence of the other children, now having to put up with the fact that the other kids need to have the same goodies they've enjoyed for a long time.
You guys are clearly in someone else's country, lets not even talk about the past crimes that have been commited by the whites under apartheid, lets assume we were starting with a clean slate here. Would it not make sense to try and appeal to the majority so as to have a say in SA's aviation future, rather than being racist at every oppurtunity and putting down the fellow "Africans" that you "SOMETIMES" call your countrymen? its no good being african when you choose to be and when you choose not to be, you spout out drivel about your so called brothers and sisters. Your either in or your not. Be consistent.

Oba, dont let anyone tell you your stupid. You understand things perfectly....
Look back a bit... Nairobi used to have beautiful streets you could drive on. Rhodesia was one of the Agricultural leaders in Africa. South Africa, as modern as any..
Now all are transformed and Africa returns to its beginnings.
These are facts, nobody HAS to point fingers.

Since we are playing this game on two threads here and no doubt the Mods are almost ready to pounce, I will just post the other reply for Oba.
Some have said they wont lower themselves to argue with an idiot. Maybe I am on equal terms.........Whatever

I'd dearly like to close this thread but I'm going to keep it going to display the nepotism and bigoted views of some of our contributors. LongJohnT, you're on final warning with your blithering "judgment day" posting. Anymore inciting, racist posts like that, unrelated to aviation & you will lose the privilege of contributing to these forums.

Carry on gentlemen but proceed with caution and due respect for others.

Poor old 4HolerPoler. Hail to you anyway.:D I think you should indulge your wishful phantasy!
A thankless task it is trying to keep the jackals from the throats of the hyenas, or is it the other way around? Never did much like the Cape Hunting Dog either. Must be something to do with shredded meat.:{

As I sit up here playing my harp, not the jewish one, you understand but Mozart K299; I cast my baleful eye over the sub continent of Africa, the land mass I consider home.
It is in a sorry state. On the one hand Bill Gates expostulates, trying to save as many people as he can from Aids. On the other, Oxfam, trying to become richer by convincing richer nations to feed the ones whom Bill may have saved but who now might be starving.
The British, the Belgians, the Germans, the Portugese and anyone else one can think of, including numerous black tribes, have eaten up their slice of the sub continent.
Where is the sanity that justifies investment in such a morass of hatred, bigotry and ill informed opinion? China and India are societies of many different tribes, colours and cultures. Their inhabitants have been subjected to wars and atrocities over a far longer period of time and to a far greater degree of inhumanity than anything that has ever befallen the African sub-continent. Yet in spite of these misfortunes, their economies boom, fuelled by external investment from foreign countries whose inhabitants regard these two vast emerging markets as stable platforms for economic growth leading to financial rewards and the concurrent improvement in living standards for all.
The ANC has not delivered on its promises and the evidence of corruption and graft that has diverted so many billions from the needy is plain to see. It's not so different in other places though. But, in China, they shoot those found guilty of corruption and fraud! In Enland, well, there's always The House of Lords.:yuk:
I wonder if South Africa's lack of cohesive patriotism lies in the fact that the country has never collectively suffered. Johannesburg has never been bombed by an enemy air force. Sandton and Soweto have never been subjected to the plague. Black and whites have never huddled together in air raid shelters, never had to help each other in order to survive.
I don't have the solutions to this nonsense otherwise I might be your leader! :p
Every time a thread like this crops up the same sort of patter emerges. The blacks go on at the whites with the same gripes and the whites riposte with equal absurdity; the sanctimonious contributions come in from overseas, from those who, if they have ever been to Africa, manifestly know it not.
South Africa needs some moral fibre in its collective soul. It is a great shame that historically death and destruction have been shown to be the best breeding ground for this most excellent human characteristic - the moral fibre - of course!
On can hardly wish upon a society the disasters that fell upon London in 1665and 1666 but is interesting to note that one led to the annihilation of a great number of the city's citizens whilst the other allowed the depopulated metropolis to be rebuilt for the greater good of all.:hmm:
