Reminds me of the Stanley days - no TV station but lots of videos. Needed tele to watch vid - guess what NAAFI stocked? Only teletext equipped TVs that were twice the price of a basic set - nothing but the best for our boys in FI.

When I was an 'orrible spotty teenager, there was a magazine that wwas loaned out amongst us fourth years showing the aforesaid Ms. Drake in some low budget Italian (I think) porno film. Only saw the wobbly bits, but enough for me to remember her name face and errmm...

The 'low budget movie' was the British 1972 movie 'Au Pair Girls'*, in which Gabrielle played a Danish girl called 'Randi Lindstrom'.

Critics commented "Pretty average English 70s sexploitation comedy, which is worth watching for the utterly gorgeous Gabrielle Drake if nothing else."

She also appeared, would you believe, in 'Crossroads' as 'Nicola Freeman'...

Which brings us back to Benny land!

Whilst I admire you older gents regressing to a time when you could still get it up of an evening, I thought i'd pick up on Mmmmnice's point about mobiles.

Cable and wireless will now sell you a sim card for your phone down here which will enable you to have as much contact with your loved ones back home as you have money in your secret savings account! Available in all good Naffi shops (while stocks last). A step in the right direction I think, unless of course you revell in the lack of contactability gained from your sentence in 'Stills'-ville.

Now, where did I put my phone charger.............

As one of those who has now retired from HMFC, fortunately it is unlikely that I will ever have to visit the Islas Malvinas ever again.. Such a shame.....

I note the following comment regarding the GSM service provided by C&W:

'Cable and Wireless Plc has not declared any active roaming agreements with other network operators.'

Which presumably means that you will have to buy a C&W SIM card to use your own phone down there?

Bloody place is still subject to the monopolistic avarice of C&W. Why should you need to buy one of their SIM cards in the first place? According to www.cwfi.co.fk it will cost people 90p per minute to call civilisation, or 20p per minute to call within Bennyland. No information given on the cost of receiving calls from the UK....

I note that you can only pay for the SIM cards by 'Scratch Cards at outlets or cash at Cable & Wireless' - which is hardly very easy if you're cooped up on QRA. I guess the DeathStar NAAFI takes Bennyfone payments?

Still(!), better than nothing. I suggested to C&W about 6 years ago that Bennyfone GSM might be a good business opportunity....

Anyone remember waiting for the SSVC videos on the mountain sites before the broadcasts were relayed - eg the joys of 5 nations matches 3 weeks old?
Or the radio - live boxing title fight cuts to the latest wool prices or inter-island flight manifests? The sheepdog Spot with his owner off to Carcass Island again - fascinating! Why is SACW X travelling to Sea lion Island with Flt Lt Y, I wonder? Or the bloody Archers at 5pm! [The BBC was often cut for the local radio].
Radio darts - topped only by the darts season preview featuring 2 of the natives discussing the fixtures? 'Sid from the Globe is always much more accurate after he has had a couple of pints'.
My personal favourite: - Islands trivia quiz. This is true, I swear:
Quiz Master: 'What is Krypton?'
Buzz - Contestant 'A green glowing mineral'.
QM: What is the Russian alphabet known as?
Contestant: 'the Acrylic'.
I suspect the sound of screaming from my skid on Kent could be heard in Stanley. I also decided it was definitely time to go home when I knew the latest prices for wool.

I was "on holiday" in the FI when the BFBS system, Bennyvision, was commissioned.

The first programme aired to the awaiting TV starved masses was...................the results of the General Election back in the UK.

However, that election had been called, and implemented, at such short notice that we poor souls down South were disenfranchised as the time period for registering for a postal vote had expired even when the GE was announced.

On my multimode receiver, I used to receive FIBS on 90.0 MHz FM, BFBS FM on 98.5 MHz FM and, for some weird reason, BFBS2 on 166.0 MHz Narrow Band FM.... Plus Bennyvision sound on 501.25 MHz Wide Band FM.

1312 used to have an excellent selection of videos - although a bit of a cock-up on the DVD region front followed when we had the first DVD player for the flight.

The wool prices! Remember those from my first visit on OP LAMPUCA in May 1986. Rough with the smooth though - I was just back from Hawaii and California....:rolleyes:

C&W in the FI are thieves. During my accompanied stint we tried to get them to contribute some phone cards for the troops at Christmas/millenium. They said no; the reason? They will pay anyway, they have no choice. That was actually their official response.
It would have also been quicker to send mail by dolphin and donkey.
I have nothing but utter contempt for them and had a wry smile to myself when their landrover was attacked once at MPA.

Has anyone tried using a normal UK cellphone mobile in Bennyland yet?

Back to Gabrielle Drake - I'm told (;)) that if you look carefully during the intro credits of the film 'Au Pair Girls', in the background shots at London Airport you can see people removing the wreckage of the BEA Trident which was clobbered by the out-of-control Airpseed Amabassador in July 1968.

The BKS Ambassador carrying racehorses from France had a flap failure on short final - one retracted, the other stayed down. Due to the uncontrollable roll, the left wing hit the ground and the aircraft swung upside down into 2 parked Tridents.

In the days of three week old television, the best had to be the test match which was rained off. So three weeks later, SSVC showed the video of the wicket covered over with rain falling. For 6 hours!!!!!!!!

No-one had the common sense to put a film on instead. Unbelievable :ugh:

Looks like [...] broadband will be "expected 2006." Wonder if that would mean VOIP (such as Skype) would be an option??
I may be mistaken, but I understand that the Catholic priest (or his predecessor) on FI uses (or used) VOIP. Long delays, though -- almost need to use radio protocol rather than speaking naturally, over.

People can use VOIP with a dialup connection (http://support.skype.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=questiondetails&_i=111), if they can put up with the lower quality.

If you register with Sipgate (http://www.sipgate.co.uk) you can for free (most others charge) get a UK number eg 01234 123456 (you choose the area code, too, so it looks like "home"). When you are logged off it goes to voicemail, which can send you a free email with the message converted to a .wav file, and when you are logged on, it'll ring! Most free numbers from VoIP cos are 056x, so are not counted in a fixed/mobile free/cheap calls package.

As regards the keeping in touch with the real world while down south, you can defeat Cable & Ruthless by using gotocall.com: just remember you will need a mic and headset. As for TV, you may find that there is a roll-out of the new BFBS digital service that is out in the Gulf and also in Germany. You get Sky News, Sky Sports One, the two BFBS channels and BBC News 24, together with a few radio channels.
