I live north of East Midlands and south of Leeds Bradford and considering the FI rating.
Can anyone recommend where to do it, and why? and also if you know of any to avoid.

On-Track Aviation at Wellesbourne a worth a look. They specialise in part-time ratings and are very well organised. Currently a student there and very happy with the course and the service.
Website (which will shortly be revamped and cleared of the horrid blueness - you'll see what I mean - is www.ontrackaviation.com). It's worth a look also because it has very clear and comprehensive details on requirements etc.

With apologies to Jinkster for slightly highjacking the thread already, has anyone got any experiences of FI courses in the area mentioned above, but which are offered on a part-time basis. I'm thinking weekday evenings and weekends in particular.

You could try DEFTS at Barkston Heath. Excellent RAF style training in Slingsby T67-260Ms. Competitively priced.

Again on-track are one of the few places that will do it part-time...

Another recommendation for On-Track - they did my FIC, started off part-time, and then switched to full-time half way through, which was no problem for them.
They are all part-timers, and do things like teach CPL/IR or fly airliners for their full-time job. When I wanted to switch to full-time, they put me with an instructor who was a retired airline pilot, which meant he could fly with me full-time on weekdays. Everyone there really knows their stuff.

If you're handy for Leeds, Stuart Anderson at Leeds Flying School comes highly recommended. He's also a FIE.
If you don't mind travelling, I pressume that Dave Coulson at Cranfield is still doing them. He was a tad unconventional but excellent.

As mentioned, Stuart at Leeds does it either part or full time and has a very good reputation, if you give him a call i'm sure he will do all he can to help!

How about the school at Sheffield? It's halfway between!
I had a look for courses being run at Sheffield but couldn't find any. Have you got a contact name/number?

If you are close enough to Nottingham East Midlands I can highly recommend East Midlands Flight Instructor School.
Alan Cooper is the instructor and he delivers highly interesting briefs and his experience is second to none.
Give him a call, his advert is in Flyer. the course lasts approximately 4 weeks, Mon - Thu but he can tie in extra days if the weather is against you or illness strikes. Also his prices are some of the best value for money around. What you pay includes everything!
