Research in Motion (responsible for the ubiquitous 'Crackberry') have patented a system that would allow an onboard signal to put all enabled personal electronic devices (mobile phones) into a "flight mode" that will not interfere with aircraft electronic systems. You can read the patent in full here (http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=%2220050267650%22.PGNR.&OS=DN/20050267650&RS=DN/20050267650).
I can imagine this being useful to quiesce mobiles that have been left on inadvertently, but of course it won't work until aircraft and electronic devices are suitably equipped!
