Escorted by two F-15 fighter jets, an American Airlines plane carrying 68 passengers and six crew members from Miami made an emergency landing at Logan International Airport last night, closing down the airport for 18 minutes, officials said.

"We were told they had a communications problem, and we were unable to talk to the pilot so we took emergency procedures, had them land, and checked it out,'' said Massport spokesman, Phil Orlandella.

The pilot of the Boeing 757 likely hit an emergency frequency onboard Flight 934 by mistake, a source said last night.

"An emergency frequency went on and then went off,'' said the source. "Something the pilot did alerted the emergency frequency.''

The Federal Aviation Administration did not return several calls to the Herald last night.

As part of the national emergency procedure, two F-15 planes took off from Otis Air Force Base and caught up with the Miami flight, according to a source.

Both Lt. Col. Maggie Quenneville of the 102nd Fighter Wing at Otis and Lt. Commander Lindsay Kough, the spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, declined comment on the deployment of the F-15s.

The airport was shut down at 6:57 p.m., when the flight landed. It reopened again at 7:15 p.m., Orlandella said.

The flight landed on Runway 4 Right and was taken to Runway 15 Right for inspection.

"When we can't communicate with the plane, we have to do that,'' Orlandella said. "When you can't verify there's not a problem, you have to assume there is.''

Passengers deplaned at approximately 7:40 p.m.
