Haven't posted anything about this previously as I assumed it would be brought up quickly but it hasn't.. .. .Coming back from the eastern med at about 9.45pm on Sunday night we were over the Belgian coast talking to London when we heard Virgin 601 (LHR-JNB?) declaring a mayday and requesting an expeditious return. They were advised by London that LGW was closer and given vectors for a 10 mile final to 08R at LGW. We landed shortly after but there was no sign of the mayday traffic and haven't heard anything since. Can anyone enlighten?. .. .wizzy

Returned to heathrow safely. Believe it was smoke in the cockpit. Possibly in flight entertainment equipement ?
IFE box in economy section was smoking badly. Mayday declared, LGW nearest, IFE power switch off, all smike dissapeared so Mayday downgraded to PAN and A/C returned to main base of LHR. Flight departed next day at 1700hrs.
looks like IFE stroke again...
