ANA, JAL to replace defective engine parts
The Yomiuri Shimbun

All Nippon Airways Co. announced Thursday it will replace defective engine parts in all of its Boeing 777 planes in the wake of recent incidents involving abnormal internal engine vibration.

ANA estimated the cost of repairs will run to about 5.2 billion yen. Blades in the engines' second turbine will be replaced due to manufacturing defects.

Boeing 777 planes owned by ANA and Japan Airlines Corp. have recently been involved in five serious incidents involving engine trouble.

In September, an ANA flight was forced to land just after take off due to abnormal vibration in one engine.

JAL will also replace the affected engine parts of all of its Boeing 777 planes, at an estimated cost of about 4.3 billion yen.

The fault was found in PW4000 engines manufactured by Pratt & Whitney of the United States.

Never realized how cosmopolitan a PW4000 engine is. PW suppliers/partners are located in 11 countries around the world:

International:

Canada
China
Ireland
Japan
Mexico
New Zealand
Norway
Poland
Singapore
Taiwan
Ukraine

The PW4000 series engine is also poweing some Airbus A330s. Korean Airlines was one of the customers for Airbus and the PW4000. Would these engines also be repaired ?

The article doesn't say who's picking up the tab for this ... I would hope that P&W will cover some (prorated) of the costs due the manufacturing defect.

Did they ever truly solve the mystery of the reverser deployments?

Is that the LP turbine? I wonder what kind of problem it could be.

Abnormal vibration and

Blades in the engines' second turbine will be replaced due to manufacturing defects. Sound very much like they've been shedding a few:hmm:

In our fleet the PW4000 series is powering some of the MD11's, A300-600's and A310-300's too!
