Instructing without an ATPL

Hello any advice please. I have a PPL, IMC, 800hours etc and at 40years old would dearly like to become a part time instructor. Do I have to complete my ATPL exams or is there any other way acheive this? Thanks for any reply - IMC

Have a look in LASORS for requirements but you seem to have the hours required to start the FI course. You can teach as PPL but cannot get paid for it - need to be CPL.

And you have to pass all the CPL or ATPL exams too, so the point of not doing the CPL skills test once you have passed these seems a little pointless. Also if you get the CPL examiner to sign you off for the FIC pre-entry test at the same time you can start your FI(R) course within the 6 months, otherwise you need to do another test prior to starting the course.

Under current legislation, you need 'commercial level knowledge' even for PPL level instruction. Hence you would need to pass ALL the CPL exams, even if you didn't go on to complete a CPL Skill Test.

It is precisely for people in your circumstances that proposals have been drafted to change the regulations for PPL level instruction, with the knowledge that EASA will require that instructors must 'meet the theoretical knowledge and the experience requirements appropriate for the instruction being given' rather than needing 'commercial level knowledge' - but don't hold your horses as any changes would take several years to bring into law.

Many flying clubs would far sooner have the part-time services of an enthusiastic, experienced PPL-holding flying instructor than some wet-behind-the-ears hours-building wannabe 737 co-pilot. Not to tar them all with the same brush, of course, but some have little interest whatever in flying instruction and will be off to the airlines as soon as there's the slightest sniff of a co-pilot job.....

Only an FIC instructor can do this assessment! In most cases a FIC instructor will not wish to take on a student he has not assessed himself!

if you only want to instruct, don't waste your time doing ATPL exams (700 hours) when the CPL exams (200 hours) will do.

Do the exams, do an FI course, then if you feel like adding the CPL you have the option (in the 3 year window). There are quite a few FIs operating on a PPL. 300 hours plus on a PPL is a much better pedigree that an Integrated Couse with 200 hours!
