A TRI can carry out type rating instruction on both aeroplanes (or helicopters) and synthetic training devices whereas a SFI can instruct only on synthetic training devices. Both TRIs and SFIs can also carry out MCC training. A TRI must hold a current licence and type rating whereas a SFI must "hold or have held a professional pilot licence issued by a JAA Member State or a non JAR–FCL professional licence acceptable to the Authority". Details are in JAR-FCL, Section 1 available on the JAA website (http://www.jaa.nl/publications/section1.html)
