Is there an easy way to work out accurate maintenance costs. I have always been put off owning a helicopter due to prohibative costs but I would like to know the figures.
This would be for private use in the UK.

365drvr:

Start first with the Manufacturers DOC's (Direct Operating Costs) Keeping in mind that most Manufacturers are rather optimistic about component life etc.

Take those DOC's then factor in your own DOC's i.e. Wages, marketing etc.

Hope this helps.

If you let me know what type you are interested in (365 possibly!) I may be able to help.

Two words I'll likely never use in a sentance, unless I'm getting a kit :)

I think the same rule applies:

If you want to make a small fortune in aviation, begin with a large fortune.

Thanx all. Unfortunately I dont know what type untill I can work out a sensible cost. Probably a Jetranger but I would like an IFR machine so a 109 power would fit the bill or maybe a twin squirell, but I dont know enough about the different operating costs to make a decision on what would be affordable. It is only to be used as a private mode of transport at this stage so I would think it should not be too exspensive to run.

First step, try the manufacturer - price of information may be right.

If you are serious, there is no substitute for this.

Another thing you might check out is if the manufacturer offers "power by the hour" or some similar service . If you do not have a maintenance organization it is a good way ( in theory) to guarantee large part of your maintenance costs.

As a general idea:
Sourced from Operators 1998

Augusta 109 power DOC £395
Twin Squirrel DOC £300
Jetranger DOC £165

Excludes fixed costs (eg Insurance)
As an example
insurance approx for the above

109 £49K
355 £36K
206 15K

All approx but it gives you an idea.
