The Sydney morning Herald is reporting a problem with fuel supplies at Syney airport. Possible delays until at least Sunday night. No disruption expected for domestic flights, but perhaps some for internationals.

Airline passengers could face delays for some days after a significant portion of Sydney's jet fuel supply was found to be unusable.

BP, Caltex, Mobil and Shell were alerted to the problem when standard testing yesterday showed fuel was "off specification".

Operating as the Joint User Hydrant Installation (JUHI), the fuel suppliers today began rationing Sydney's jet fuel to 40 per cent of normal demand.

"That will continue to at least tomorrow night at 11pm when the decision to ration levels will be reviewed again," said JUHI spokesman Peter Scott.

He said initial tests showed the petrol had low levels of an element that ensured there would be no static build-up when fuel was moved.

This has meant the suppliers have been unable to transport fuel to aircraft, he said.

A Qantas spokeswoman today said services would continue but flight delays would continue until fuel rationing lifted.

"The oil companies are working to resolve it and we hope it will be resolved soon," she said.

"Domestically we just make sure that flights have the fuel as they come into Sydney and that they refuel from other ports," she said.

But international flights have to replenish their stocks at other airports.

So that's why VH-OJS operating QF1 was behind me on final into YPDN last night.

Was quite a sight, actually, some decent and rare heavy metal at an AD where the largest QF send is an A330/B763.

This may in fact answer the dilemma regarding the "Backfiring" 737 :}

Gave a certain NZ A320 operator arriving tonight an excuse to "request change to 34L in the interest of fuel conservation" when being told by ATC not available due traffic, went on to explain "we've got enough fuel to make it back to New Zealand tonight without refuelling if we land on 34L, just thought it would help out the problem at Sydney".

Sorry dude - guess you didn't appreciate the offer of a tug instead from 34R?

:ok: Official confirmation: as from Sunday 2300 Local we are back to using the hydrant system, after using our Tankers all day to overcome the fuel "conductivity" issue at SYD. It's been a struggle,for everyone, but thanx to all for your patience with us. It was just one of those one in a million things and rest assured that it was done in the interests of everyone's safety.

air nz combined 2 a320 flights out of auckland and 1 out of christchurch and put all the pax onto a 744 ex christchurch, with the price of gas the way it is would it not make sence to go back a few years and have 2 or 3 larger aircraft per day rather than 5 or 6 smaller ones
