Probably just a beacon going off. Its standard for ATC to get info from acft about whether they can hear the beacon, how strong the signal is etc. to assist AUSSAR with the emergency.

isn't there a yacht missing off the coast somewhere? a couple of missing souls, a few found I thought I heard in the ether ...

Was just a beacon going off. Found at YBAF after a student put it down a tad hard. No drama and the ATIS recording is standard procedure.
