Anybody know how I'd get a US licence for the purposes of ferrying etc.

I have a UK/JAR ATPL with Boeing 737 and A320 type ratings (along with others) about 4000 hrs P1 on 737 and 3000 P1 on A320.

Is it as simple as give the FAA a call and they'll do a an issue or would there be exams to take - and if so what and how many.

Any info appreciated.

Hope this helps:

A U.S. certificate issued on the basis of a foreign pilot certificate will reflect any ratings you currently hold. However, you will not be able to operate aircraft for compensation or hire. Therefore, the U.S. certificate is only valid for private pilot privileges. (reference 14 CFR 61.75; http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=2bf3a23bfb338ead83eb9ab45b4d767b&tpl=/ecfrbrowse/Title14/14cfr61_main_02.tpl)

You may get a US license based on your foreign certificate by following these three steps:

1. FAA will verify your license by checking with the civil aviation authority in the country that issued you the license. Fill out the form at http://registry.faa.gov/docs/verify61-75.pdf then send it, with the documents the form requires, to:

Airmen Certification Branch
AFS-760 PO BOX 25082
Oklahoma City, OK 73125-0082

or fax the form and documents to (405) 954-9922. It will take FAA about 45-60 days to confirm your license. We will send you a letter when it's approved.

2. Take the appropriate written test at any computerized knowledge-testing center that gives FAA written tests. You can find a list of sites at http://afs600.faa.gov/srchFolder.asp?Category=computertesting.

3. Bring:
· your license,
· a current medical certificate
· the letter from FAA Oklahoma City
· another picture ID
· the results of the computerized test.

to any Flight Standards District Office. You can get a list of Flight Standards District Offices at http://www.faa.gov/avr/afs/fsdo/. You will need to phone the office first to schedule an appointment with an operations inspector. There is no fee if you are applying in the United States. If you are applying in a foreign country, bring a check from a US bank or an American Express travelers check. Make the check out to the FAA for $68.00 (US). Additional information is available in FAA Order 8700.1, Volume 2, Chapter 29. You may view this at: http://www.faa.gov/avr/afs/faa/8700/8700_vol2/2_029_00.pdf

NOTES ON MEDICAL CERTIFICATES: If your license and your medical certificate are part of one document, and the medical certificate is not current, you must revalidate the medical portion in your country of origin before you apply for your US license. If your medical certificate and your license are separate documents, and the medical certificate is not current, you may be able to get a US medical certificate. Contact a US aviation medical examiner. You can find a list at http://ame.cami.jccbi.gov/.

*** IMPORTANT *** Additional requirements for United Kingdom Applicants:
In addition to the procedures stated under Verification of Authenticity of Foreign license, Rating and Medical Certification above, airmen from the United Kingdom should note the following additional steps that are required by the United Kingdom CAA to complete this verification process. Please visit the UK CAA web site at http://www.caa.co.uk/srg/licensing/whatsnew.asp. The additional forms are required prior to the UK CAA providing any requested information to the Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760.

Please note: The Verification of Authenticity of Foreign license, Rating and Medical Certification form must be submitted directly to the FAA, Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760 not to the UK CAA. The information required by the UK CAA must be submitted directly to the UK CAA and not to the FAA, Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760.
