From another, less informed website:

"

Apparently there was a bit of a mess with a Vietnam Airlines 777-200 that has illegally crossed into Russian airspace. They did not respond to the Russian Air Force jets that were escorting them and safely landed at Domodedovo Airport.

The story is still developing. "

Any further new on whether this is all it seems to be, people?

First hand story from Russian ATC guy:

There was no interception at all, no jets.
The prolem basically is that ALL Russian airspace is controlled by militaries and only designated airways are controlled by civilian ATC.
The flight was coordinated with civil side through the normal procedures and in their turn Russian civil authorities should coordinate that with militaries. It is not known exacly where the system failed but militaries knew nothing about this flight. Further, when 777 entered Russian airspace, it was assigned with "intruder" status by military controllers, but apparently they realized that civilians know about this flight. Then they have relayed the ORDER to civilian ATC to turn the flight back instead of scrambling jet fighters. But do to the fuel onboard remaining and lack of suitable divertion airport in the area, civilian ATC decided to allow them to proceed to Moscow.

Typical Russian chaos :(

20 years ago, perhaps, they wouldn't even be in that part of the world? ;)

Apparently things have not changed that much.

Similar thing happened to us with a VN B767 about 13 years ago. ;)

I still don't understand what happened.

I still don't understand what happened.

The Vietnamese jet was allowed to fly into Russia by the civil authorities, bur apparently they did not forward this to their military counterparts.

That's what the confusion is all about.
