I have a plane booked for 5pm this evening, the weather looks good.
I need to log some cross country hours so I was going to go to breighton then wonder off towards the coast.
Does anybody have a better suggestion?
I was sitting here wondering what to do and thought "why not ask the great and the good on pprune" I want to broaden my horizons so who better to ask!
All thoughts and suggestions much appreciated

I should point out I am flying from sherburn!

Squawk 2650 - I believe you may be thinking of Brighton, not BREIGHTON, which is in Yorkshire!! Bit of a bimble to get to Pompey from Sherburn in Pelmet!!! ;) :D

You don’t say where you are coming from.

Brighton's nearest airport is of course Shoreham. Its open until 20-00 local. Don’t even try and land or depart after! The VRP to the East is Brighton marina from which tracking inbound you will have a good view of Brighton city. Shoreham is friendly and worth a stop for a coffee if you like. Alternatives in the area are Goodwood (but closes at 18-00 to non locals) and further East Headcorn. Headcorn is great as they don’t close until sunset, very friendly and a cheap landing fee (free if you want fuel). Watch out for parachuting.

Have a good one!

PS the coast along to the Seven sisters and Eastbourne is very pretty (to the East of Brighton) and depending where you are coming form maybe up to Headcorn and then around the Gatwick zone.

Not having a North of Engalnd map to hand its a bit difficult for me to make useful suggestions, but how about a nax-ex down to the Humber Bridge and back. If you want it a bit longer than tha carry on down to Spurn Point and then head north up the coast before turning back home. The other option (as squawk 2650 suggested) might be a land-away at Huddersfield (Crossland Moor?).

Fuji,

Sorry about this, but you do look as though you haven't read the thread at all. Yorks.ppl he does say where he's coming from its SHERBURN[-IN-ELMET] . The field he was talking about going to is (as Circuit Basher correctly points out) is BREIGHTON, note the extra E, which is also in Yorkshire.

I've heard of Yorkshire, so how about Sherburn, up to the Dales & turn at Great Shunner Fell, then down the spine/ POL, Derwent Lakes & left into Sheffield for a landing, then home..

Watch out for red helicopters..

I would concur with the opinion that a jaunt off into the Pennines (not literally) is worth the effort. Great scenery, especially over towards the 'wrong' side near the Lancs border and Ribblesdale. Useful experience too as nav can be a lot more difficult over the Pennines below 4000' than you may be used to up the Vale of York and round about, as there are considerably less recognisable ground features. It's easy once you get a feel for the place though.

Further afield, take a trip up to Carlisle either via the dales and the eastern edge of the Lakes, or up to Tyneside and down the Tyne valley. Again, the scenery alone is well worth the effort.

Thanks for all the replies, even the ones from people who think I can't spell Briyton ...er brihgton... oh thats it,.. Brighton

:p

Heli- redeye and maude charlie, I agree the scenery over the penines is stunning and I like the idea of the land away at sheff, never thought of that, I will try that next time.
So I am sorry to have disapointed those of you whe were expecting me either over the pennines or in brighton but in the end I did what I first planned and went to BREIGHTON , where I carried out a pathetically poor pair of landings.:O
The first of which resulted from being much too high on final so landed way too long and, with the end of the field looming, went around. The second approach was fine but I suspect , having landed long first time I was a little too keen to get it down which resulted in a couple of bounces, so to the two guys watching at breighton , my appologies for the poor show:O

Anyhow it all worked out for the best as my pasenger was able to see where his horse lives from the air so he , at least, was pleased with the trip even if I felt less than satisfied.
:(

thanks again to ALL for taking time to make suggestions and who knows, perhaps I will make it to Brighton when my confidence improves:D
