Something like this has been running on Rotorheads since early 2003 quite successfully. So, I thought it was time to copy the idea.

If anybody has heads up on a job in flight testing, anywhere worldwide please feel free to post details and/or a link here. Rules will be:-

- Any in-depth discussion on "how to get" a particular job on another thread or privately please.

- Any posts concerning jobs which have no substantial FT content will be deleted without explanation or apology.

- No general posts to an agency site, only to specific jobs.

- No large graphics or pictures.

Apart from that, please be sensible, please post as much information as you reasonably can, and please respect the anonymity of all posters unless they specifically state their identity in a post or their profile.

G

Postscript, 2 December 2004. I've been asked by PPrune Deputy Chief Pilot to crack down on agency posts - so two recentish posts to this forum (both in this thread) have been deleted today.

If you do represent a recruitment agency, please contact PPrune management via the website, they don't charge much to carry your adverts and this is the most widely read aviation professionals bulletin board in the world - so I'm sure you'll get value for money.

Sorry about that, but I have some idea how much money you chaps make out of placing somebody, and I'm sure that you can afford it.

Hello all,

Maybe not quite as specific as Genghis would have liked but I can tell you that there will be an intake of graduate level engineers at Boscombe Down [QinetiQ] in January. The ‘grad’ scheme at Boscombe is one of the finest around, offering participants an opportunity to train as aircraft and aero systems trails officers. The work centres around the test and evaluation of current and future military aircraft and their associated systems etc. The grad scheme’s duration is two years, during which you will visit several departments on placement. It’s typical to do 4 – 8 placements whilst on the scheme. Placements could be in aircraft dynamics, air vehicle systems, project management or anywhere else that interests you (providing you can find someone to mentor you). There is also a fair chance of taking part in Empire Test Pilot School (ETPS) courses too.

Professional development with the various academic bodies is encouraged and fee’s are usually paid. In addition to this there is a set of management modules being offered by Bath Uni for QinetiQ grads – again this is paid and offers the grads a chance to broaden their ability and function in other parts of the organisation if interested.

There are likely to be 10-ish places on the January intake. If you are a recent grad (some post grad experience is fine too) and are interested in a career within the aircraft evaluation world then apply online at: http://www.qinetiq.com/home/careers/graduate_careers.html

Good luck,

QQ

Genghis,
Probably not the FT job news you wanted to hear but the Bombardier Flight Test Center in Wichita has just announced that 51 positions will be axed. Understand the majority are on the shop floor i.e. mechanics & technicians. The Wichita Eagle (http://www.kansas.com/mld/eagle/10414876.htm) has the story in their Tuesday edition and it's on all the TV stations.

Luckily Cessna has just opened the "largest GA Service Center in the world" with a long list of vacancies so hopefully things won't be too bad. Guess it's one of the advantages of living in the Air Capital.

For anybody who considers test flying too undemanding nowadays (pdf) (http://www.esa.int/hr/PDF/ESA_2005_13e.pdf)

On that subject, does anybody know if ESA is ever likely to do another Astronaut recruitment drive, the last one must be about 6 years ago?

The economy and the industry must be looking up. A job fair was held today in Wichita and there were over a dozen Aerospace companies represented. Amongst others, Bombardier, Cessna, Eclipse and New Piper had Flight Test or Design/Development jobs. See http://newspaperads.kansas.com/RopCategory.aspx for details.

Not my field, but I got this in an email and thought some of you may find it of interest, oh and I don't work for the mentioned company either:

Boscombe Down, Salisbury, Wilts
When it comes to test and evaluation, QinetiQ is in a league of its own. On behalf of the MoD and industry partners – both in the UK and internationally – we work on a diverse range of cutting-edge projects. From trialling the Apache helicopter to testing the F35 Joint Strike Fighter Jet and A400M transporter, there are limitless opportunities here to develop your skills and experience.

Project Test Pilot
Up to £65,000 + benefits

Working within the Rotary Wing Test Squadron (RWTS), which is responsible for conducting military rotary wing test and evaluation, your role will involve preparing, executing and reporting on specific helicopters trials. You will also be the continuity pilot for research and development trials activity.

You must be capable of taking on the role of authorised Technical Assurance Provider to assist the Officer Commanding with the preparation and reporting of trials activity. Being a Qualified Helicopter Instructor to assist with flying training and standardisation would also be an advantage. We need someone with recent flight test experience who is a graduate of a recognised flight test school. You’ll also need to maintain Captaincy on a variety of rotary wing platforms. Ref: 13101

The Empire Test Pilot’s School (ETPS) is a global centre of aviation excellence, training Pilots and Flight Test Engineers to assess a broad array of aircraft and equipment before and during service. Our rigorous standards are world renowned, as is the quality of our students.

Rotary Wing Test Pilot/Development Test Pilot
Up to £65,000 + benefits

This is a dual role at present, working primarily for ETPS with short-term detachments to RWTS for helicopter trials activity. With ETPS you will be responsible for teaching, mentoring and assessing test pilot students on a variety of courses. You’ll cover everything from delivering lectures and preparing flying exercises to conducting training flights and contributing towards the development of new courses. At the RWTS, you will operate as a Test Pilot flying a range of helicopter trials, as well as preparing for and reporting on trial activity in the UK and overseas. You will also have some responsibility for the provision of flying supervision, flight authorisation and technical assurance for flight trials.

We’re looking for experience within a practical flight test environment, either in the civil or military aircraft fields. Ideally, you’ll also have a good grounding in more than one of the following areas: aircraft dynamics; aircraft performance; air vehicle engineering systems; weapons integrations and human factors. Educated to degree level, or equivalent, you must be a graduate of a recognised flight test school, while experience in a teaching environment would be an advantage. Ref: 13077

True, but to be fair, the phrase used in the advert was "work on"; I recall all the excitement when I was there and Sqn Ldr ***** **** became the first Eurofighter project pilot to actually fly the thing - and I think he was about the 4th pilot in that post. Similarly how many Nimrod 2000 project pilots have there been? - and have any of them actually flown it yet.

It's always been vital to have pilots, preferably TPs, involved as early as possible in the design and approval process of any flying machine hasn't it - nobody ever said that test flying was solely a flying job.

I'm sure you're right about flying being hard to come by, it always has been for many in the test flying world. We could certainly argue that's a bad thing and when it happens something should be done about it, but perhaps if we do that should be in another thread.

Seems to me that QQ are trying to be cheapscates, whilst riding on the back of all that has gone before. What is a TAP, seems more like an Engineers job than a TP`s?
Further, being a Tutor demands a full time job in my view, as it will take perhaps a course of students before one is fully up to speed, with the lecturing, briefing, demo, and supervision aspects required, , and reporting, even if one only has a couple of students. Then to be dragged off to run/assist with trials , and all that that will involve ,seems to be diluting one`s responsibility to both sides. For all that, I`d expect a salary +benefits on a par with BA senior captains...or have I got it all wrong ?

Maybe the rumours about the resurgence of the aircraft industry are true. The Wichita Eagle was a positive mine of new aviation jobs relative to the last few months.

Diamond aircraft (www.diamondair.com) in London, Ontario, Canada has a vacancies for a Chief Test Pilot and a Senior Flight Analyst among nearly a dozen other engineering jobs.

The S-Tec division of Meggit (www.s-tec.com) has a vacancy for a Sr Flight Test Engineer again with several other jobs.

There are also engineering jobs with Bombardier Learjet, Garmin & Kollsman.

I may know of a PhD studentship going in experimental flight mechanics sometime in 2006. Anybody with an interest in building their career on 3 years of slave labour and flight test, let me know and I'll pass your details on.

Does this education involve flying duties? I am coplilot on a crj with 2300h and highly interested in any flight testing duties. Unfortunately I have no degree, since earning a bsc besides the job seems almost impossible here in Europe. Appreciate any help!!!

A PhD studentship generally involves being employed for 3 years as a "research assistant", on a lamentably low salary (say, about the same as your annual allowances!), but you get to do cutting edge research and (assuming that the quality is high enough) you get a Doctorate out of it at the end.

The technical demands are pretty high, they sometimes will have somebody without an MSc, but it's almost unheard of to take somebody without a BSc or BEng. The only person I know who did a PhD without (so far as I know) any previous degrees was Darrol Stinton - look him up, you'll see why!

Genghis

Is this PhD studentship still on offer ?
I´ve already an MSc and PhD in engineering, 8 years research experience in an electrical/aerospace engineering company and changed to aviation 5 years ago. Now 2300 hrs on the ERJ145 as SF/O and working as technical pilot in the fleet management. Looking for the cutting edge...

Thanks

Excuse my ignorance, but why have two PhD's?

Some people are just gluttons for punishment I think. Personally one was bad enough and I can't say I feel any desire to tempt fate by trying for a second.

On the other hand, a PhD is a very high level of recognition that you have made a new and original contribution to the sum of human knowledge in an area. One might, I suppose, want to have that level of recognition in several areas.

We have a couple of mature students in my current research group who are doing their second doctorate.

Levering this thread back on track - some actual FT jobs from today's local Air Capital paper.

Garmin have vacancies for an "Aircraft Certification Systems Engineer & Flight Test Pilot" (BSc, ATP + 1500hrs min) and an "Aircraft Sytems & Flight Test Engineer" (BSc + Avionics experience). Both these are in their Salem, OR, facility (guess that's the ex-2morrow/UPS site). E-mail [email protected].

Bell Helicopter are also advertising for Test Pilots (amongst a lot of other jobs) at www.bellhelicopter.com. There are also multi-job listings for ARINC in Oklahoma City, Kollsman (Avionics) in New Hampshire and L3 Communications in Greenville (Dallas) & Waco, TX (the old E-Systems).

Raytheon (Beech) has a job fair next week and rumour has it that Cessna will also be recruiting soon but, as you may have heard, Boeing (Military) in Wichita will be letting up to 900 "narrow-body" staff go in the next six months as the hoped-for new tanker has yet to materialise (there's still a lot of '47 mods).
