DAMAGE TO AIRCRAFT1:_damaged beyond repair
DAMAGE TO AIRCRAFT2:_damaged beyond repair
Both aircraft received irrepairable damage in two seperate accidents on the single runway at Lokichogio. First, shortly after 13:00L the HS-748 performed an emergency landing with its landing gear retract. To clear the runway from debris and to allow access to the damaged HS-748, the airport was closed for all traffic. However, about 1 hour later a Transafrik L-100, arriving from Sudan also reported an emergency due to fuel shortage. The pilots then attempted a landing on a part of the runway that was clear of any debris from the other cargo plane. The L-100 made a very hard touchdown, bending the hull beyond its limits. The Hercules pilots were unable to stop before the wreckage of the HS-748 and both aircraft collided. No injuries were reported but both aircraft are likely to be scrapped. Lokichogio Airport was closed for two days hampering emergency food relief operations from Kenya into Sudan on behalf of the UN world food programme (WFP).
