There was an article in one of the UK comics (Pilot I think) many (10-15) years ago, about extreme weather.
I recall vividly that an incident was described over the Sea of Japan, where at least one commercial flight reported an enormous 'mushroom cloud' punching through the cloud deck (at 10,000ft) and rising quickly to 30,000ft+ - looked exactly like a thermonuclear explosion. The Japanese even sent a military flight through the 'stem' of the mushroom to check for radioactivity, but it was clean.
Utterly unexplained so far as I know. Anyone heard of this incident, or know of any references on the internet?
