The CAA permit you to fly a G-reg aircraft VFR in the UK on an FAA PPl licence. Does anyone know if you can then fly the G-Reg to Europe on the same licence?

You can't.

Sorry Genghis, that is incorrect.

An FAA licence is "a licence rendered valid" under the ANO. This means that it is valid in a G-reg wherever in the world you wish to take it. The restrictions are

a) that you can't instruct (even on the basis of a foreign instructors ticket)

b) that you can't engage in aerial work

c) that you can't fly under IFR in controlled airspace.

There are no geographical limitations or day/night restrictions as often quoted. The full reference for this is ANO Article 21 (4a)

The only grey area here is that the UK departs from the required ICAO standard and does not issue a specific piece of paper proving that the foreign licence has been "rendered valid". Instead, the ANO makes the blanket declaration.

In principle, a foreign country could query the licence/reg mismatch and ask for clarification. As to legality though, there is no question about it.
