The FAA report such an incident involving a UPS MD11 aircraft at Louisville, Kentucky, on the 7th June 2005. Time of incident is given as 0525 with no injuries reported.

According to a Boeing source, it was this aircraft, N250UP:

http://www.planepictures.net/netshow.php?id=230230

An upgrading captain was in the left seat, and an IOE instructor in the right seat. Along with two jumpseat riders they exited uninjured via the L1 slide.

The damage was "substantial", Boeing will come up with a repair bill and UPS will decide what to do next. UPS has previously spent tens of millions in repairs to avoid a hull loss (see: http://www.aviationpics.de/mish/2001/ups/ups.htm ) like Qantas did with QF1 at BKK.

The various versions of the Mad Dog have had more than their share of landing mishaps in recent years, particularly at FedEx, and some folks think they may be too dangerous even for freight. Very few remain in pax service, ostensibly due to poor economics.

It is amazing that they could salvage that plane!! I guess it all comes down to advertising and reputation.

My understanding is that the DC-10 was a significantly better aeroplane, on many fronts!

Pity time caught up with it.

Airbubba: Among several others on Pprune, you always have soild, reliable information.

I'm outside the country for a while. If you have any major, verifiable developments regarding the US major airlines, could you post it on a new "Rumours" thread when you have a chance *no question mark on this keyboard*.

Been gone four days. Thanks. This hotel computer will not display Yahoo Airline topics, unless they are biased for Italian aviation etc.

"Et tu Bubba", arrivederci.:D

Just transferred to the Mad Dog, pax version that is,and I think
it lands easy enough. But the pitch LSAS is programmable, so
if you don't like the landing characteristics, put in a new floppy
disk and voila!;)

Here more on the "safety" record of the the MD-11:

From a couple of the pictures on the web page above you can see where the Mad Dog got its other affectionate sobriquet, the Turtle. It either rolls on its back or heads for the water.
