Hello people..

herd many instances in many airlines, although never experienced by me..on economy class, people sometimes are given menu, with choice of meal, when asked for a meal not avialable as they v run out of it ... an they gotta settle for the remainin meal.....

i have been thinkin bout this and jus wonderin what others think ...

cant u bring up a issue with the airline requesting a refund or watever, saying u paid for the ticket like everyone else, but then unfair treatment took place and u were given a meal inferior to the other passenger although same fare was paid?//, discrimination maybe...

any thoughts?

Did the conditions of carriage or ticket sale state expressly that you would be given a choice of meal? If not.... don't bother!

Why would anybody want to do that anyway?

There are wars all around the globe, man being inhospitable toward man.

Floods, fire, famine and incurable disease.

And you are concerned about airlines running out of beef!

I do not mean to be rude here however, Please could we have some prosective.

ie... There is more to be concerned about in life than...
"I am sorry we only have chicken left"!

This happens on almost every flight in the airline I work for.

We carry over 400 passengers in our economy cabins, therefore to offer them all a choice of 3 meals would mean carrying over 1200 hot meals - then throwing over 800 of them in the bin!

The airline is really quite good at guessing the number of each meal that will be requested, and generally only leaves 10 / 20 pax with their second or occasionally third choice.

Generally speaking, the only passengers who will have a tantrum when denied their meal preference are Americans, and to a lesser extent, English. In my experience, other nationalities accept what you give them with thanks.

Like fourplay says above, there are more important things happening in the world than worrying about what tiny meal you eat.

I have had a few passengers complain at me, one (American) shouted at me, and quite a few have demanded complaints forms. I guess their lives must be quite content if that is all they have to worry about!

It should also be noted that my airline, like the vast majority of airlines, can, and will happily, cater for ANY dietary requirement you can think of. We just need 48 hours notice!

Behind that curtain is not a kitchen complete with chef - its a galley, complete with harassed crew trying to please everyone with what little we have!

By the way, neetpan, are you serious about legal action!? Are you out of your mind!? Or just a typical American....

My advice to those of you desperate for the beef, dont sit towards the centre of the aircraft!

Hello ...

Virginnboi,

About legal action, was just exploring possibilities...wondering what my chances would be ...

"more important things in the world"... agree, but then when i am flying, one of the most important things to me is my meal,
if i am given a choice, and my preference not given, i would definitely be annoyed..

"There are wars all around the globe, man being inhospitable toward man. Floods, fire, famine and incurable disease",......

Agree with you,... why dont u give up your pc, why go on vacation ?...why dont u just donate all the money to all the people who cant even afford shelter??? Maybe send some food to the many Africans suffering from famine??
Arent these factors far more important than you going on vacation, or owning a computer??.....

Virginboi ... "with what little we have" ,... why bother offer us a choice then ??...

(IN THIS MESSAGE NO OFFENCE TO ANYONE JUST OPINION)

'why offer a choice at all then?'

Good question - our airline offers only one choice for the 2nd meal (breakfast) on one particular flight (all the other flights there's a choice).

Guess which route and meal never receives a complaint for running out of choice?

neetpan, an airline is a transportation company, not a resteraunt. You have paid for transport from A to B - the meal is an added bonus. If you have specific meal needs then order a special meal from the 25 IATA special meal choices, and spare us your whining.

Neetpan....
It says on your profile that your on the road to becomming a pilot....CHANGE YOUR BLOODY ATTITUDE QUICKLY THEN!!! Or be sure you wont be getting any meal choice, just the rubbish that the cabin crew could be bothered to scrape off the oven door for you!!

neetpan - I think that you have an excellent hypothetical case for discrimination, and should proceed with it as soon as possible. If the situation takes place in Europe, then you should immediately contact the European Court of Human Rights (http://www.echr.coe.int/) since it is clear that your rights have been infringed in that you have been discriminated against. This kind of airline behaviour is outrageous and simply has to be stopped. The next time that you find yourself in this stuation, it is vital that you keep an accurate, written log of the event, and then maintain it for several weeks afterwards: It is possible that you may experience loss of sleep, reduced libido and various other side-effects resulting from the trauma, and this information could prove vital when the case comes to court.

Please ensure that you keep us all fully updated on PPRuNe on your progress through the courts once you have initiated the action, as we are deeply concerned.

And also we need a good laugh!!!

Virgin boi I couldn't agree more.

When I was still flying for FCA (charter) I used to get really annoyed when passengers complained about this (and in some cases became very rude and agressive).....and they had bought an all-inclusive one week holiday to Ibiza for £99!!! :*
Maybe I should have asked the captain to make a diversion into Tesco Airport just to buy Mr I Don't Eat Beef a chicken breast?? :hmm:

Really, there's not much dignity left in this world!!

Worked for FCA a few years ago and at briefing I mentioned that we had meal choice.. and best way to load carts etc. one of the crew said ' Oh I don't bother giving a choice, I put 3 beef on one side of the ailse and 3 chicken the other side'........

Don't think she understood the concept soemhow...

Neetpan,

as said, it would be impossible to cater a flight so that each passenger had a guaranteed choice of each meal offered. Could you imagine the food wastage and the costs incurred by the airline. If an airline was to cater each flight the above way, your airfare would cost you A LOT, LOT more. Hopefully when you get into the flight deck you don't treat the crew the same way because you don't like the crew meal supplied!!!

Here's an idea, when checking in, request to be seated towards the front of the cabin so that way you may have a better chance of getting your preferred meal. Again as said previously, remember, it is an aircraft with a galley, not a restaurant with a kitchen and a head chef!!!!!

ps- have a look on the menu when you receive it and see if it states "aplogies if your preferred meal choice is not available", i know that's what ours says.

pps-if you tried legal action on this issue, i think you would literally just be laughed at.

your paying for transport,
not a 5 star meal.

no need for legal action now,

when i am flying, one of the most important things to me is my meal,
....I suggest your future lies with the kipper fleet then.....
If it really concerns you, then ask for a special meal - you'll be guaranteed to get what you want.....
It doesn't just happen in Y - has happened to me in J as well. It just ain't a big deal......

Rather than playing the man.......

I think if you look at the cost of tickets, you can see why some people should not be surprised at the lack of choice, then again there are still some hefty fairs out there and not everyone travels on a jet 2-3 times a week.

If I was on my first long haul overseas trip, had saved up yonks for it, I would'nt be particularly impressed if I didnt get my meal choice. Yeah true, its not the end of the world - but some people have high expectations, and rightly so. Some people are forking out a fair bit of cash, and to get served a meal worth about $2, which was frozen by "Snapfresh" about 12 months earlier is a bit average (this is let alone their choice of meal).

I understand that the practicalities of carrying 2 choices for everyone in Y class aren't realistic, but its not necessarily just going to be the fact that people miss out on their choice that makes them peeeeeeed off, rather the manner in which they are told, and unfortunately some of the QF crew I have seen, need a courtesy injection.

Anyway, In QF the lack of choice can be pretty restrictive, depending on which port - they invariably try to cater to the last pax, so that there is very little overlap in choices if any at all.

I think the disgrace in QF occurs as you start looking at your premium passengers. I have been in J class, with 2 other passenegers, only to run out of my meal choice (I was the second pax served) - I think what happened here was that the CC had there meal choices, then the pax got theirs.

I have seen even worse occur in P class, where they dont even offer some of the food! Yet it has all been happily shipped to the rear of the cabin! Only when a few regualr pax ask for it does it appear after much mutterings and groanings and dissappearing to the rear of the jet.

Blueloo,
Although I cant speak out of personal experience for QF I must agree that the attitude of some crew when it comes to the last choice does leave a lot to be desired.
It is at this time crew should especially be nice and apologetic. At the start of the service I generally make a PA advising of the choice (we dont have menu cards at BA in Y anymore) and include an apology if the first choice is unavailable by the time we get to you. Then when it does happen I make an apology before I present the tray and then offer to go and get them whatever drink they would like instead of just wine. Usually works for me and I must admit that its been a long time since anyone has actually argued or been rude to me because of the fact!

....................

I guess a nice apology from the cc is all thats needed,

Havent really seen that "apologose if meal choice not available" on any onboard menu...
guess this is only seen on certain airlines, certain airlines dont have this and are not apologetic about it, if the cc dont say this in a kind manner, doesnot help at all... guess thats what would get me annoyed...

well i must say most people are pretty good about not getting their choices. however sometimes i have seen the attitude of fellow workers saying "is that or nothing". I mean really this kinda attitude does suck a bit.

on the weekend i had a passenger who was vegetarian and forgot to place her order in. she was genuinely nice and i felt sorry for her, so i ran up the front and got her a nice salad from J class. Took me only 5 minutes to organise, and she was very appreciative.

I think if you explain to customers, apologise, try and get them something else or offer a free G&T it really does go a long way. Some crew are just so over things they couldnt b bothered, and if u did bother and make an effort u would find most people r pretty greatful.

I know it can be hard if u have 20 pax who are totally pissed, but guys sometimes its the little things that go a long way.

i once had a lady fuming at me over not getting her choice. She started with this song and dance about how she booked the tickets 1 year ago etc etc. I politely told her she was arguing with me over a crappy little meal, and that some people in this world go for days without a meal. (cheeky yes i know, but it had to be said). Her hubby was quiet embarassed, and told her just to take the meal. Anyways to cut a long story short, i found something even better for her. Took it down to her, not even a thank you from her. although its great to help people out and find something else to eat, people such as her dont deserve it! so unappreciative!!!

I think we need to put some perspective on all this - your ticket is for your travel - not the fine dining experience.........otherwise there would be less seats to squash people into and there would be tables at which you would sit ............:suspect: :suspect:

You should perhaps think of changing your name to 'fryingpan' with this food obsession. Anyway, as dogs-ears-up said in an earlier post, the best way forward is legal action. Follow his advice and if i may recommend the following lawyers;

SUE, GRABBIT & RUN

You'll find them all over the States as they're very good at their job. Americans seem to love them for some strange reason?

By the way, if you are successful, (which would be quite possible given previous daft legal claims in the US), don't be too surprised if this appalling Airline refuses to carry you EVER again, that's if they're still in business after your multi million dollar lawsuit. And if you are accepted on another carrier, don't expect a choice. All Airlines will offer a take it or leave it 1 meal policy......................
..to avoid future litigation themselves!

Learning to be a pilot....................give me a break!

Cabin Crew "Sir, would you care for the chicken?"

Neetpan " What, I hate chicken, it's foul ( fowl!)

Cabin Crew " Would you prefer the beef instead?"

Neetpan " I don't want mad cow disease woman!"

Cabin Crew " Can I offer you the fish from FIRST perhaps?"

Neetpan " Oh my cod no. I might choke on some bone!"

Cabin Crew " Apart from cheese, there's nothing else to offer"

Neetpan " Not good enough. I demand to see the Captain!"

Cabin Crew " Sir.........uh............you ARE the Captain!:oh:

Blueloo,

I find that very hard to believe that they ran out of your meal choice and you were only the second passenger served. We aren't that depraved and cold hearted at QF that we take the passengers meals before they've been served. We're lucky enough as part of our agreement to be supplied with business class meals as our crew meals and generally a lot of the time they are the same as the pax meals anyway, so there would be no need for crew to take your meal in the first place.

I agree though, a lot of crew, not just at QF need an attitude adjustment. Sometimes on the cart i cringe at what some F/A's say to pax. At the end of the day there is no need to be rude (crew or pax), infact you'd be causing yourself more hassles. All you need to do is to think how lucky you are to have the job you've got and how many people would jump in your shoes in a split second.

Well out of 25 J class seats, as hard as tried to find more pax, there were only 3 of us, all in the front row. - and given the fact that I had a menu with three choices on it, and I was told your choice has run out, I can't see any other explanation. I did watch the pax next to me eat the prawns though.....
