Storm/Lightning Website

A while ago there was a link to a meterological website that contained historical plots of Lightning activity. You could get it to show you a plot of lightning strikes in the UK for any time in the past few years.

Does anyone know the link I am talking about?

The link takes you to the Europe map but links on the left-hand side allow you to view a number of countries including the UK.

Thanks, that is very similar to the one I was talking about (maybe the same but revamped). I can only get it to go back a couple of days. I was trying to view the Bedfordshire area at around 0330BST on Sunday when we were subjected to an awesome display of lightning such as I have rarely seen.

Any other websites that go back further?

There is much analysis and disussion of this event here:

See especially the thread entitled "Synoptic analysis of mid-level storms....overnight April 30th/May 1st". There are many maps and radar plots of the event and if there is any information you would like to see I'm sure the members will share it with you. They are a friendly bunch unlike some of the prima donnas on this site!

I actually witnessed the early stages of the storm you saw as it developed over Dorset from my vantage point in Teignmouth, Devon at around 0030BST. My parents said it was one of the worst night-time storms they have ever witnessed as it came through Leicester at around 0330BST

Incidentally I think they have changed the site with the lightning plots - I've just noticed it only goes back a couple of days now.

Very interesting discussion on that website. I'm glad I am not the only one who thought it was truly awesome. Not very often that weather becomes as alive or interesting as that.

The freedata link looks very similar to the site that I remember. I think perhaps the websites have worked out that what they were providing was worth a bit of cash and therefore limit there free offerings.

I had great pleasure from witnessing it from my tent !!
It passed over the Gower Penninsula at 0100BST and seemed to last about an hour.

That is the one I was thinking of. It only goes back 24 hours though.

I was in my 150 year old house and I thought it was pretty terrifying as well. Wondering how much of my excessive DIY renovation could be undone by a direct hit from one of the thousands of lightning strikes! Being in a tent would have been a serious brown trousers situation! Perhaps wishing you had wooden poles and that you had pitched it a shade further away from the huge oak tree.

Hope for another lightning show again this year.

gingernut - that was the second cell which developed over north Devon at about 2330. I saw that one as well from about 60 miles and it was by far the more active of the two - flashing away every few seconds.
