I am planning a flying trip in the US this summer, where I intend to visit some friends in Washington. Does anybody have any recent experience flying VFR to Washington? What is and what isn't allowed at the moment? Can I fly VFR to Reagan National, provided I am in radio contact with transponder following a flight plan? What about Dulles? Is it expensive? If not, what are other airports close to DC with fewer restrictions?

Thanks,

I can't tell you about VFR, but I flew my Trinidad IFR into Dulles a couple of weeks ago without a problem. There are no landing fees, but the usual handling agents such as Signature charge a ramp fee of around $70.

Excellent value.

Dulles, Leesburg, Manassas are all OK once you get over the ADIZ clearance hastle.

National is "NO" to GA. Congressmen get a better deal but I doubt if you qualify!!

Pay attention to the ADIZ procedures closely. Many violations for minor infringements. Call Leesburg Flight Service to get the correct procedure. Helpful people.

Have fun.
