Near nasty at Isle of Man?

Any truth in the rumour that a foreign registered aircraft flying for Euromanx had a near nasty while doing an approach to 08 at the Isle of Man recently? Story is that it disappeared from radar before the VOR. If true sounds very similar to the two incidents that happened a few years ago.

I think the 08 procedures were changed after the AAIB investigated the two previous events.

Think your right ecj.....both those aircraft were doing, i think, VOR/DME approaches.

Since found out that the 08 glide path has been out of service so aircraft are having to do LLZ/DME approaches. If this incident is true, is this another case of confusion between the 'IOM' DME (4 miles from the airfield on final) and the ILS DME?

Can anybody confirm the incident?

The 08 VOR/DME was suspended PDQ after the incidents a few years back and I think it true to say that most of the Manx local aviators always believed it was a procedure waiting for an accident. However, the suspension didn't last long because I guess it was about a year later it re-appears in all its glory, unmodified, still counting down the DME into the IOM VOR and then counting out towards the field. IMHO it should never have been reintroduced. RW08 has ILS or LLZ/DME or, if push comes to shove, SRA from the admirable RWY controllers.

Would any viewers from the tower care to divulge why the 08 GP has been so tempermantal of late?

With ref to the 08 GP serviceability, there was a significant hardware failure in the GP equipment, no spare was available so a replacement had to be provided from Normarc in Oslo. This has now been fitted & the 08 glidepath returned to service.

If memory serves me right isnt the VOR minima more restrictive than the NDB minima on 08?

I have heard that the airline involved have been withdrawn from the euromanx operation following another safety related incident later in the week.

Euromanx - no thanx

There are some experienced operators on the IOM, most of them work for BACX, and the tickets usually cost the same.

May I suggest you keep derogatory remarks to yourself

I happen to work for one of the operators flying for Euromanx and there is no doubt that all of my collegues are highly skilled, exceptionally safety concious pilots........

Bit sensitive, aren't we? I'm with ptc.

He was not having a go at inexperienced copilots as, I asume, you are by your profile.

You may be exceptionally capable for all we can tell.

He does, however, spends his own money and takes his choice and it IS true to say that a lot of BACX pilots, particularly the ex Manx people, have a great deal of experience in operating into the IOM, an airfield that can be a bit tricky at times.

Bully for all your colleagues by the way - they seem much like most of the professional pilots of my accquaintance.

If you read my profile you'll find I'm still on a frozen ATPL and am therefore still a relatively inexperienced pilot - I'm certainly not having a go at inexperienced pilots.

Maybe I misinterpreted ptc's 'no thanx' to euromanx comment however given the line of this thread I think it would be harsh to tarnish an operators credibility due to a third party airlines mistake.....which euromanx ditched after the incident

Since when was euromanx an operator? All of "their" a/c are, as you put it, "third party airlines". They are a ticketing agent who have pulled the wool over the Isle of Man's eyes with some fancy PR :ok:

A word from the wise - Euromanx did not dump said operator after the incident referred to in the original post. It took a sceond incident 3 days later before they took that decision.

In fact Euromanx were more than happy to send pax off on the same aircraft only a couple of hours after the original incident.
