Heathrow CTB reaches its 50th birthday this year and this coincides with the “topping out” of the new control tower building.

To celebrate these occasions NATS will hold a buffet lunch on Friday 1st April, in Conference Room 1 in the CTB from 1200. Hopefully there will be some form of "nostalgia" presentation during the afternoon.

This invitation is extended to all current and former members of the Heathrow team and those wishing to attend should contact Nadine D'Austin, telephone 0208-7453550 by 23rd March.

NOTE: PHONE NUMBER IS APPARENTLY WRONG. TRY 0208-7453350.

Sadly, I'm stuck with an Afternoon shift on 1/4 but I shall be thinking of the great time I had @ EGLL from 1970-72 : D Watch has to foot the blame for setting me loose on the ATC world ! Have fun people ;)

Halo... I'll be at the "do", but probably not upstairs. Which watch is on, morning and afternoon on the day??

Gonzo

C Watch morning, B Watch afternoon.

You might recognise a few, HD, but the watches have changed personnel over and over.

I joined D Watch at the end of 2000 and I'm the second most longest serving.

C Watch was my first watch at Heathrow... and I used to spin with B watch. Doubt I'd know anyone there now..

Sorry your're on Doom watch!!!!!

Hope you all have a nice party, to celebrate 50 years! I hope there are positive plans for the old place; the unique silhouette of London Airport's Tower has been a byword for international jet-setting for half a century. (Yes, London Airport - all other claimants are pretenders).

There are other nostalgic associations, too. I was married in the basement - better known as St. George's Chapel - in 1983. We were both Heathrow people and most of our friends worked there or thereabouts, so it was the perfect place! We even got the plods to give us dispensation to park all the wedding cars in the road opposite T2 car park!

I also recall the staff bar on the ground floor and the silver service staff resturant on the 1st floor - all gone now.

You could also pop in and pick up an en-route met briefing from the 1st floor - I used to do this when I was at the x-country stage of the PPL.

Apart from the above, the building is a substantial office block. As things are, I don't see what redevelopment in the CTA is going to require its removal. Hopefully it will fulfil a useful function for some time to come...

Cheers,
The Odd One

<<Yes, London Airport >>

Hear! Hear! And I always answered the outside phone line as "London Approach".

I hear talk that the old tower will be retained for emergency use, in lieu of that dreadful place on the top of T2...??

Gonzo

AFAIK the tower will be retained as contingency.

In a previous existance in about 1980 I helped fix a photocopier in the old tower....does that count?

Am I bothered, ask me if I'm bothered

Computer says No!

'Fraid the gremlins got into the works with the number listed for those wanting to attend the reunion on 01 April. It should read: 020 8745 3350 (not 3550).

I was on a visit there in the 90's. Don't suppose that counts.

Have a good afternoon - well deserved and I think a great anniversary to mark.

Always a profession I am in awe with. I am just a simple chap fiddling with the wires behind the screen !

I remember the first time I saw a picture of the tower at Heathrow and being somewhat disappointed. Being the country's premier airport and me a rather naive nine years old I'd expected something a little more swish looking. These days I couldn't imagine the place without it and I'm pleased it's being retained. The tower at my local place is rather younger (38) but it's a rare survivor in a place that's changed beyond all recognition.

Enjoy the do. :ok:

I've gotta say that the new tower is awesome and probably is going to become one of London's landmarks.

Looking forward to Aramark opening the revolving restaurant.

Widger,

Yeah, then maybe we'd have somewhere to eat....as it stands we're not going to get a kitchen.....
