Cargo plane crashes in Uganda, no casualties

ADDIS ABABA, Mar 19 (Reuters) A plane contracted by Ethiopian Airlines to carry cargo to Uganda has crashed while landing near the Entebbe Airport but there were no casualties, officials said today.

''A Ghanian registered cargo plane, carrying cargo for Ethiopian Airlines under contract has crashed on touch down at Entebbe Airport,'' Girma Wake, the chief executive officer of state-owned Ethiopian Airlines, told Reuters in Addis Ababa.

He said there were no casualties although the crew and the pilot were rushed to hospital with injuries.

''The cause of the accident is under investigation but a preliminary report indicated that there was bad weather,'' Girma said.

Most likely a Johnsons Air aircraft then.

<Reuters hat on>

I have some video and will shortly post a story on www.reuters.com

Amateur shots, show aftermath - large chunks of aircraft in shallow water, colourful flotsam retrieved to the shoreline, tail sticking up above the water a la 'Jaws', and

2. (SOUNDBITE)(English)ZAMBRA AKANDONDA, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY SAYING:
"This morning, a Ghanaian registered aircraft from Addis Ababa crashed on attempting to land at Entebbe International airport. The aircraft was leased to Ethiopian by a Belgian company based in Belgian now as Cargo Plus. It was going to Lomé. Fortunately, after the crash, the fire and rescue was able to reach the site on time and rescued all the five crew on board.

Looking at "Cringe's" first photo, it is difficult to spoke the difference between a rescuer and a scavanger.

The plane was well-known as until february 2001 a regular and somehow troublesome visitor to OST, then Tarom-registered as YR-ABC. Afterwards registered as 9G-IRL and owned by Johnsons Air, it was also operated on behalf of First Int'l Airlines and Cargo Plus Aviation, both the latter companies still having offices at OST, though no Johnsons or related aircraft was ever seen at OST since end 2003.
