An engine fire led to an AA 777 aborting its take off at EZE on Friday night. 216 pax evacuated on slides. 5 injured. none seriously. Airport closed for 5 hours. Full story here:

Engine fire "spreading to the cabin"?? Probably sensationalist reporting, but could someone knowlegeable in 777s enlighten us as to how an engine fire on departure (or otherwise) might provoke smoke inhalation injuries in the cabin.

Or is it more likely that smoke inhalation could have occurred during evacuation from the aircraft.

Smoke could have reached the cabin through the bleed system.

And there was yet another engine fire during take off roll incident at EZE on Monday night. This time it was United 767 and the 173 pax and 12 crew had to take to the slides too. Full details

The fire was a result of a cracked fuel nozzle supply pipe on the rh engine. (Rolls supsect a bad batch, engine was on wing sine new, 17000 hrs approx) The engine, pylon and thrust reverser are thrashed. Pax were evacuated from the L1 thru 4 and R1 slides with no injuries. The fire occured on the take off roll. A job well done by the crew i think, not so hot by the local airport fire service who took over 7 minutes to extinguish the fire.....

Would the bleedless engines to be used in 787 decrease the chance of a cabin smoke event?

The 787 concept uses electric air conditioning rather than taking bleed air from the engine, so you won't get engine fumes in the cabin. All you have to ensure then is that the electric system which replaces it doesn't have any nasty failure modes... I'm sure the designers have it covered!!

I'm an Airport Fire Officer at LHR, we are increasingly responding to calls of smoke in Cabin or Cockpit. last week there was an evacuation due to one of these reports on 9R.
Engineers advise us its due to bled valves on engines in the A/C system. :O
