Arrived in the LAM hold with delay around 10-15mins.
Vis at LHR hovering around 2000m, cloud 7/8 at 500ft.

Very quickly vis dropped to 1100m and cloud down to 200ft. the Director announces LVPs in force.
We were at FL80 in the hold, and in theory next off, re-brief for an autoland and get giving heading downwind to land 27R.
Shortly there after a company airbus pointed out to the controller that
" our paperwork says that if LVPs are in force we are to land on 27L"

Pause from the contoller who then sends us back to the LAM hold, and issues us an EAT-nice!
A quick reread of pages of briefing, and it does infact state that we are to land 27L in LVPs

My question is; is it only a BA thing or is it due to the various work around the airport at the moment?
For info, other aircraft were still landing 27R

Many thanks

There is WIP on the exit at A9W on 27R, our paperwork associated with this says the during LVPs 27L is to be used as the landing runway with 27R tactically available.

When we went into LVPs the other day we needed to get rid of the departures that were waiting at the 27L hold before the full stream of arrivals could commence. And 27R was used "tactically" to keep the landing rate going until we could fully use 27L. Was also confusing for us on the ground too!

Thanks for the reply, thought that that had something to do with it, just slightly confused as to why other companies were accepting 27R.
Cheers.

Spoilers,

The work in progress may well have ruled out Cat2/3 approaches to 27R. If Cat1 approach minima was still available, even with LVP's in force, then there is no reason they can't carry out an approach to 27R. It might just not be preferable, and BA have chosen at it's own discretion to not allow it. There's a diffreence between autoland capability and LVP's being in force.

Question:- If 27L was blocked, LVP's in force but weather above CAT1 ILS minima, would you have landed 27R? Seems BA prohibit it - but it's perfectly legal......

Accept your point, in fact we considered a cat 1 radio, auto approach to 27R as the minima, as you correctly say would allow a cat1 landing.
The paperwork however does not seem to allow for the fact that you could carry out a cat 1 app in LVPs.

On the day, the controllers were working exremely hard with the unforecast drop in cloud base, we had the fuel so we just waited our turn and autolanded ( firmly!!) on the left.:ugh:

I was in an empty office on the third floor that day doing TRUCE (TRaining in Unusual Cricumstances and Emergencies for those who don't know) and it was interesting to see the top of our new tower obscured by cloud, and it's not even reached its full height yet!

Was too busy on the phone to look over that way....interesting considering it has another 24m to add!
