Good morning, Leeds or Blackpool ATC

Forgive the intrusion onto the ATC forum, but I am trying to identify a particular Helicopter,...... only to its make and model,...... there is no malice or snooping going on, let me avail you of the details.

My base is just North East of Blackburn, more or less on a direct flight line between EGNH and EGNM, .. on Tuesday 8th Feb at about 1400 to 1430 hrs I was outside my office and overhead flew what appeared to be an extremely Old possibly vintage Helicopter, flying East to West... almost looked like a garden shed crossed with a greenhouse, it was piston powered, had a angled highish tail rotor on the end of a short tail boom, very slab sided and Dark green or dark blue in colour it was getteing along at about 50/60 knots.

I cannot find any pictures of this sort of Heli, nor can any Rotohead suggest what it could be, .. so I make this request to your forum just to see if this helicopter can be named!

My Regards

Hi Dan,

No it was solid sides and no visible ladder work, I have spent ages looking on all the museum links to see if I can spot the thing but to no avail!

It had the appearence of a very old Van body with windows with heavy frames at the front , the only thing that appeared to have any shape was the profile of the screen all the rest was angular typical of the 40's/50's Commercial body builders, I have just posted a simply rough drwing on the rotorheads.

Hi Peter.
Sounds like a Westland Dragonfly to me (Sikorsky S51).
Slab sided with a heavy framed glased nose used by the Royal Navy early fifties before the Whirlwind..
Photos on www.airliners.net just search Dragonfly or S51

Steve

Sorry guys,

We seem to be drawing a blank, it not the Skeeter or the Wasp or the Dragonfly, I only wish it was, seems I have seen something that I cannot find even a picture of, I've spent hours looking through many of the flying Museums collections on the Web, all to no avail, this thing has to be somewhere.

Thank you all for you input thus far, got to find this thing and name it!

My regards
