More than 60 air traffic controllers in Italy face jail after they skipped work to play football.
The mass trial of 61 controllers has heard they were on the pitch while others covered for them at their radar screens at Linate airport, Milan, as hundreds of flights passed overhead.
Police found out about the mass absenteeism after a tipoff. The men were arrested and charged with fraud. A verdict is expected next month.

The Colombian ATC guys fixed a match against their Jamaican counterparts a few years ago, but it had to be called off 'cos the Jamaicans smoked all the grass, and the Colombians sniffed up all the white lines...

The public prosecutor is asking for the 36 flight controllers to be sentenced to jail terms between six and nineteen months.
The absences occurred in 2000, when there was a shortage of flgiht controllers at the airport.
It was in 2001 at Linate Airport that 118 people lost their lives, when a SAS aircraft collided with a smaller aircraft on the runway."

Uomini radar, chieste 36 condanne
Processo per assenteismo a Linate
Il pm di Milano, Fabio Roia, ha chiesto 36 condanne nell'ambito del processo per assenteismo a carico di 61 controllori di volo in servizio all'aeroporto di Linate. Gli uomini radar sono accusati di truffa ai danni dello Stato. Le pene richieste dal pubblico ministero vanno da 6 mesi a 1 anno e 7 mesi di reclusione. Le assoluzioni sono 25. Nella causa è coinvolto anche un dirigente della struttura, Nazzareno Patrizi, accusato di omessa denuncia.
Il pm ha ricostruito tutti i singoli episodi attribuiti agli imputati (assenze per andare a fare shopping, gite o anche partite di calcio) e alla fine ha sottoposto alla quarta sezione del tribunale le conclusioni, quantificando le condanne in relazione ai singoli fatti e motivando le ragioni per le quali sono state invocate le assoluzioni.
Secondo Fabio Roia parte della responsabilità è da attribuire da parte dell'Enav, assente nei controlli. "Forse se l'Enav avesse eseguito i normali controlli previsti - ha detto - non saremmo qui a fare questo processo". All'intervento del pubblico accusatore erano presenti molti degli imputati che hanno poi ascoltato anche il rappresentante dell'Enav, costituita parte civile contro gli uomini radar mentre proprio è stata ritirata la costituzione contro Patrizi. Il legale Enav ha chiesto un risarcimento di 50mila euro a titolo di risarcimento del danno subito all'immagine.
Il processo continuerà ogni giovedì con le arringhe difensive. La sentenza dovrebbe arrivare entro la fine di febbraio. Non ci sarà invece un processo bis per fatti analoghi attribuiti a 21 uomini radar accusati di interruzione di pubblico servizio per un episodio avvenuto il 10 febbraio 2000 quando, in seguito ad un blackout verificatosi all'aeroporto di Ciampino, parecchi voli furono dirottati e a Linate si registrò una situazione di difficoltà.
