So who WAS controlling?

More than 60 air traffic controllers in Italy face jail after they skipped work to play football.

The mass trial of 61 controllers has heard they were on the pitch while others covered for them at their radar screens at Linate airport, Milan, as hundreds of flights passed overhead.

Police found out about the mass absenteeism after a tipoff. The men were arrested and charged with fraud. A verdict is expected next month.

So who WAS controlling

The Colombian ATC guys fixed a match against their Jamaican counterparts a few years ago, but it had to be called off 'cos the Jamaicans smoked all the grass, and the Colombians sniffed up all the white lines...

This has the hallmarks of being an urban-myth (the same story being repeated but without any further detail) There's a virtually identical "story" in PersonnelToday dated November 5th...

Reported on Danish news 15 Jan 2005.
DR News

Rough translation is :

"Linate flight controllers are to be tried in court.

A number of flight controllers from Linate Airport, Milan, northern Italy, are to be tried in court, after accusations that they left their work stations to play football, or go shopping.

The public prosecutor is asking for the 36 flight controllers to be sentenced to jail terms between six and nineteen months.

The absences occurred in 2000, when there was a shortage of flgiht controllers at the airport.

It was in 2001 at Linate Airport that 118 people lost their lives, when a SAS aircraft collided with a smaller aircraft on the runway."

It's also on Italian news and gives names (of public prosecutor and the manager responsible for the controllers) and details. Story more or less the same:here

13/1/2005
Uomini radar, chieste 36 condanne

And they are still going to strike for the most ridiculous reasons

I guess the 1786 Italian ATC unions are very busy at this time, trying to decide if that penalty kick in the last 5 minutes was right or not.
