Coming into LHR when there are holding delays we often get told that if we reduce speed inbound to the hold we won't lose our place in the queue.I seem to recall that this wasn't always the case but my question is do we just retain our place in the say LAM inbounds or our place amongst all the LHR inbounds?

It's the same thing! When there are significant delays (10 mins +ish) the heathrow boys and girls start using the arrival sequence number produced by the clever little box of tricks that monitors inbound rate/delay etc.. This is generally first come first served, give or take a little juggling for wake vortex categories to maximise the overall landing rate. So if you're told you wont lose your place, it's true for that particular stack and LL generally. Unless of course you manage to get back to 140kts with 50nm to the stack, in which case by the time you get there the delay will probably have gone anyway.
