The following has been posted to a alt.travel. uk.air. .. .MOL has announced that he is considering charging passengers to check luggage into the aircraft's hold as part of his bid to keep fares low on his Ryanair flights.. .. .Charging for hold luggage would bring in extra revenue for the low-cost carrier and allow it to offer cheaper or even free flights. It would also encourage people to travel lighter, eliminating the need for baggage handlers and paying out for lost luggage, he stated.. .. .Also MOL is looking at asking passengers to buy a £5 voucher for. .on-board snacks, and selling space on overhead lockers for advertising.. .. .This should be fun!!. . . . [ 23 March 2002, 22:05: Message edited by: LTN man ]

Unfortunately, the security paranoia following 11 Sep means that I no longer bother to travel with any hand luggage other than a book - some bottom-fondling failed wheelclamper would no doubt have discovered some reason to query even the most innocent item which I used to take in my cabin baggage. . .. .So now everything goes in the hold - and I'm sure other passengers do the same and O'Leary would be penalising passengers even more were he to charge extra for hold luggage now that so many things are banned from cabin luggage!. .. .It's still possible to fabricate some nastily effective weapons from items which will easily pass security checks - I'm obviously not going to say how, but I'll be raising this issue at a conference in the near future. Let's have a return to sanity for passenger flying - you can't even eat a meal at an airport restaurant with real cutlery at Stansted these days, for example - and not settle for opportunists making money out of passengers' misfortune!

Just another con by the low cost carriers. When they're exposed with all the cost add-ons to the headline fare for a return trip, they'll be seen more expensive than the all inclusive 'full service' majors!
