Amazing...

Well, the VIP passengers had run amuck....

A Jet Airways pilot is facing criminal charges after a group of state ministers assaulted crewmembers, broke into the cockpit and forced open an aircraft door on an active taxiway at Mumbai airport on Monday.

As the Boeing 737-700 taxied towards the runway to operate flight 9W 111 to Nagpur, a group of state ministers on board began to get agitated since the air conditioning was not functioning properly. They notified the cabin crew about their concerns, who in turn notified the pilot. The pilot told them that one of the airconditioning compressors was inoperational but that the temperature would stabilize once they were airborne.

This explanation was not acceptable to the ministers however and they began to agitate within the cabin. One of them kicked open the cockpit door and dragged out the captain, demanding that he abort the flight while another forced his way past cabin crew and opened the aircraft door while on the active taxiway. The aircraft was forced to return to the terminal and a substitute aircraft was arranged to transport the ministers to Nagpur.

The ministers subsequently filed a complaint with Nagpur police against the pilot of the flight, accusing him of endangering their lives by means of attempted suffocation. The state government has also instituted a court of inquiry to determine the penalties that should be levied against the captain.

No charges will be filed against the ministers. A Jet Airways spokesperson described the incident as an "unfortunate misunderstanding" and promised that a disciplinary inquiry will be instituted against the pilot.

Yep, I don't think they would get far with this stunt in the U.S. post 911.

I promise not to let this incident affect my views on air transportation in India...

Airbubba,

Gotta love a system where the pilot's guilty until proven innocent!

Guess they don't have a NASA type program.

ummmm........

Isn't this the sort of incident which, if it took place in other places (say, a small island a bit further east) would have others in similar jobs in other parts, maybe taking some sort of sympathetic action... ???

These government ministers may be able to get away with it withing their own country, but can't we publish their names to ensure that they get the treatment they deserve when travelling internationally?

I imagine most captains would like to know if they have a maniac on board with a reputation for kicking down flight deck doors.

Two of the ministers concerned are named in the articles in SD's post, including the one that forced the cockpit door.

Many of us have operated aircraft in hot climates with a u/s APU and no available ground external air. In those circumstances it is also normal to have a high cabin temperature until you get the engines started. It is not comfortable but it is the height of arrogance for government ministers to do what they did. It is extraordinary that this should result in the pilot being disciplined.

You could question the pilots decision to depart with a pack inop by asking the cabin crew if the high cabin temperature was really necessary and some communication from the Captain by a pa would certainly have helped, but to force the cockpit door is unacceptable. It is certainly a worry for others travelling in India and flight crews flying in to India.
