calculation of distance using lat and long

In my dim and distant past at the college, I remember being taught how to calculate the distance between two places using the lat' and long' .

The calculation is relatively simple if both places are in the Northern or Southern hemisphere, but i can't recall the procedure to use if one is in one hemisphere, and the other place in the other.

Is there a web site where this can be calculated?

It's to assist someone who has asked the question in a national newspaper.

We just use the equipment on our radar sector to determine heading and distance <G>...

So do we Scott, but I don't think that the average British newspaper reader has their own radar installed at home, but then again, we do have an above average population of sad people who should get out more...........:p
