"Further work has to be completed before the airlines become the government's strategic partner. This incudes getting EU approval and also agreement with foreign airlines, some of whom are worried about favourable treatment for British carriers. "

I wonder what KLM / Lufthansa / Air France think of it all? Not to mention our friends across the Atlantic.

Still, should mean more work for Tony's mates in the Legal profession. Remember the Lottery Fiasco? The Lawyers made a fortune from nothing.

When you say favourable treatment for British carriers you surely mean the same treatment they receive from their own ATC authorities.

My bet is that the 'partnership' will not receive EU approval and the DETR will duly capitulate - just like the French, Spanish et al who always comply with EU disapproval of continued subsidies to their state airlines!

Anyone know if "Nimbus" are able to mount a legal challenge to the decision to select "The Airline Group" as prefered bidder, in a simillar manner that Camelot did when Virgin where named as prefered operator of the lottery.

You Poms should be grateful that Novares crapped out in their bid for control of your system. The very same F**kwits have wreaked havoc with our NZ system, so if it's not already apparent expect massive changes when the accountants are put in charge of something they know nothing about. If it's centralised they'll decentralise it, and if it's already decentralised they'll centralise it. They don't seem to mind spending on a bit of new gear, but they hate paying staff, and trust me, accountants don't understand us or what we do. They very quickly resent us.

So it's staff that make all the company's savings. You'll end up with 4 people doing 6 peoples jobs. After about a year you'll find that you can't get leave, and everyone's totals are creeping up. You'll also find people looking elsewhere for job satisfction, which exacerbates the situation. After a couple of years you'll be very short of staff, and the ones that are left will be owed lots of leave.

It'll be interesting to see if your Airline Consortium are any different......

Steep Approach: The other people who stand to make a fortune are the banks/insurance companies/whoever who put up the cash, not just lawyers. They ALWAYS get their piece of the action up front and backed by the government. Look at the NAVCANADA bit---non-stock federally chartered corporation financed entirely with debit to a couple banks (backed by full faith and credit of Canadian govt., of course) Some privization.
