How does one become a FISO?

Any information about getting the quals to become a FISO would be much appreciated,

There are two written exams, one of which you are exempt from if you hold a PPL (which I presume you are, looking at your profile).

The exam you will have to sit is fairly straightforward and covers the material in CAP410 - Manual of FIS, which you can see online at http://www.srg.caa.co.uk/pub/pub_publication.asp?Action=Cat&type=ATD

After passing the exam and getting the FISO licence, it has to be validated at the aerodrome you intend to use it at. This involves not less than 40 hours of training (max 4 hours per day) followed by a practical examination, either from a local validity examiner for the aerodrome or a CAA examiner.

Take a look at CAP427, which details the requirments - your local FIS unit will have one.

Hi TB,

I have trained FISOs for validation and would suggest that those with a PPL generally get up to speed faster. Additionally those who have done Air/Ground previously have sometimes have problems losing the old phraseology.

One you have the writtens out of the way the 40 hours is only required for the first validation - after that the time for further airfields is at SRGs discretion.
