According to "El Pais" an a340 -600 heading México from Madrid was obliged to make an emergency landing in Lisbon because of smoke in the cabin. Nine of the 288 passengers were injured in the evacuation, one seriously. One of the nine was gravely injured and had to be operated in hospital. The airport was closed for four hours as a result of all this.

Don't get excited please if any of the above details are wrong. I offer them as a rapid translation from a reputable newspaper, nothing else.

Russian President was delayed in Lisbon due to this emergency landing, he was on his way to the Asia-Pacific summit in Chile.

The A/C reg of the A340-600 is EC-IZX and it landed at 03:15.

Isn't IB having quite a few problems and incidents lately involving their A346's? I recall reading of burst tires, other diversions, overheating brakes, smoke in cockpit..........

Maybe it's nothing, but it just seems a bit more than usual for a new fleet.

Dunno, you could probably say the same thing about BA's 777 fleet. How many smoke-in-cockpit emergencies have they declared in the past year? New fleets bring novel diversions.
