View Full Version : TCAS RA

Heard an aircraft the other week inbound to LGW via MID report a climb RA. The controller responded in a fairly unaffected manner. Within a minute or two a different controller took the frequency. I wondered what the procedure is with you guys when one of these events occur?

On average, the TMA probably has five RA's a week. This is mainly due to the high closure rates of outbounds against inbounds, often around four or five thousand fpm, hopefully to both level off seperated! We have a TCAS information form to fill in, asking for details of the occurence, which I believe finds it's way back to the manufacturers/engineers to see if it was correct, or if a nuisance alert, if the parameters were OK.
If it causes no disruption, generally, we just carry on, and either fill in the form later, or someone else notes the details for us as we continue working.

Do you also mean: How does the controller react to the RA? If so, the deal is that the ac is given information regarding the confliction but the controller is not allowed to counter the RA issued by the TCAS. In other words, at the point of the TCAS RA responsibility for collision avoidance lies solely with the ac captain.

TCAS RA is a relatively routine occcurrence. The controller MAY have been relieved because the computer equipment montoring the radar displays on the ground detected a theoretical erosion of seperation. Again, not normally a major issue other than a shed load of paperwork.
