Anyone know the origin of "TYRO" used to denote a low-experience pilot??

I believe it goes back to when Pontius was apilot!! A Tyro was a raw foot soldier in the roman legion RAF adopted it for a pilot of "limited experience"

I believe it's used in sport too. It certainly was in target rifle shooting, which was a sport I pursued for many years but remained a tyro throughout!

I like that as a theory, raw foot soldier.
It has good phonetic qualities too I suppose
