View Full Version : So how old are we all?

c-bert
9th Sep 2004, 07:33
Well I've been lurking and posting in this forum for a while now and I suspect I'm pretty young to be here (with a few exceptions) being a 24 year old young'un.
I'm curious to know the average age of our web enabled GA community. For those of you who are sensitive about these issues a rough approximation will do! :ok:

Now look here young man .........

Didn't anyone tell you it was rude to ask a lady her age, especially if she is old enough to be your mother, and nearly old enough to be your grannie! :{

DB - growing old disgracefully, given half a chance :ok:

I can only apologize, but take heart from this - neither my mother nor my grandmother are internet using pilots....:D

A PPRuNer who recently found out my age by devious means (another website and some detective work) said he'd thought I was 20 years younger than I am. Well...I often knock ten years off, but from now on, I might try 20. That being so, I have no intention of telling you all my real age, and if I did, you wouldn't know whether to believe me or not, now I've told you all that I sometimes lie! And like distaff_beancounter, I come from a generation when it was rude to ask a lady her age. But no problem, asking is fine; just don't expect an answer. ;)

Growing old is compulsory; growing up is optional. :ok:

29..... Had PPL for 3 years, though let it lapse and have only started flying again in last 6 months.... now on taildraggers, hurrah! Although with only a tailskid and no brakes, taxying is challenging in all but the lightest of winds.

I have the perfect method of being devious about my age.

When asked, I never tell anyone how old I am -
- I just say that "my last birthday was my xxth"

I was born on 29th February, so I only get one birthday every four years! ;)

But I am not THAT old!!! :)

LondonJ
9th Sep 2004, 12:21
you're 44-47, let x = 1, therefore your last birthday was your 11th. Given that it is every 4 years that puts you somewhere between 44 and 47.

Old enough to remember what it was like to fly when a twin hired out at $25/hr, fuel was very cheap, HF Comms were DSB, VARs were just starting to become popular, most aircraft didn't have ADFs, VA/ORs, DMEs or GPS and you were number 12 waiting in line to take off on Saturday morning at most of Australia's secondary airports.

Old enough to be a Seanmhair,
Young enough to throw a wobbler ,when things don't go right ,

But still enough sense to fly an aeroplane .

As old as I feel.

Or perhaps as someone else I might manage to feel.....:E

On the local TV last night there was a piece about an 81-year old pilot about to set off in a replica SE5A to St Omer. Now THAT puts any of us to shame!

And I'm very slightly older than the lovely Pinkster !!

The cracker about the bit on TV re: the 81 year old flying his SE5A from Popham to St Omer was the final shot of his wife, vainly trying to get into their car and realising the old b*gg*r had taken the keys with him. A classic................

I loved his comment about making sure he had the support of She Who Must Be Obeyed as well, I wonder how many of us suffer slight hostility from that direction from time to time?

vainly trying to get into their car and realising the old b*gg*r had taken the keys with him.

Happened to two of my friends at Bristol - as they ascended P2 says to P1 "Have you got the spare set of keys?"
"Yes" says P1, "I left the master set in the ignition in the retrieve".
"Bugger", says P2, "I put them in my pocket to keep them safe...."

Retrieve driver below is going frantic, thinking that she's lost them!

Only two and a half years until I'm celebrating my thirtieth birthday. Or should that be drowning my sorrows?

Ten years ago I thought by now I'd be working behing a desk, maybe own a house, car and be seeing a nice girl, whilst staring with glazed eyes up at the skies loning to be one you aviators.

In reality I am indeed working behind a desk, have my own car, but I don't own my own house yet due to this flying lark! Six hundred hours and a variety of different licences and certificates haven't really left me any spare cash over for the mortgage... oh and no girlfriend either.

I really should get my priorities right one day.

Best wishes,

Charlie Zulu.

I was considering the UAS, but i used to be in the air cadets and got sick of the RAF side of it.
obviously UAS is more flying based, but still seems a bit too much like the RAF for me.
I'll probably still give it a go, but if anything i'll fail on medical grounds, was surprised enough when i got a class 2 with no problems.
