Remember my thread of a couple of weeks ago??

Well here we go again.

Prospective LAS's for Nerc were 'invited' to meet the DGM/AC the other day.
On arrival they were confronted with himself and a couple of other managers and basically told that their task was to bring the 'unruly' element of the watch back into line - whatever that is!!!

Another fine example of open and honest management and communications.

It is little wonder that the staff are less than happy about their lot at the moment, and to resort to this form of intimidation just shows how far removed from reality the upper end of Nats has become.

Every time I walk through the foyer I pass all those propaganda posters from New Dawn which are actually now completely laughable.

Any truth that the construction work at the front of the Latcc car park is going to be a waiting area for all those wanting early retirement/voluntary redundancy?
Count me in - I've had enough of all this rubbish!!!!!!!!!!

Surely, if any watch has an "unruly" element it should be up to the appropriate Watch Manager to take appropriate action. If none has been taken either there is no "unruly" element or the Watch Manager is not "managing" effectively. A candidate for that 20% perhaps?

How exactly did they define"unruly or unacceptable behaviour"? Did they specify? Did they name names?
There are professional reputations on the table here and I can't believe they can throw potentially defamatory accusations around without being required to back them up.

MACC 29 all the time!!!!

Numpo-Nigit I may have been missing the point here not being at LATCC but I think by "unruly element" they mean those that won't stay behind after afternoon shifts to cover night shortages etc, could be wrong, but if that is the case its nothing to do with mismanagment at watch manager level the unruly ones are those that that are deemed as YES men/women

MACC - simultaneously right and wrong!

Yes, LATCC management regard the behaviour of staff sticking up for their rights (as in the example you gave) as "unacceptable" and therefore, by implication "unruly".

However, if the reports of this meeting are correct (and I wasn't there), amongst discussion of examples of the above, there was a much more serious, although unsubstantiated, accusation. If this allegation is to be believed, and it has been going on far as long as indicated, inaction by the Watch Manager (and any more senior managers who were also aware) would be gross deriliction of duty - at least in my view.

So there appears to be a choice -

1. these allegations are TRUE but management have failed to act over a long period of time, or
2. these allegations are UNTRUE and management are "being economical with the truth" for reasons of their own.

We all await the next instalment.....

I fail to see how the LAS is going to have any impact at all on the behaviour of the staff. I am not aware that staff discipline comes within the remit of the LAS. It is true of course that nobody really knows what the LAS is supposed to do even though there have been several years to give it some serious thought. However, I would have thought that we would look to our respective LASs for support and encouragement. If they try and get "heavy" with anybody I predict a very quick loss of respect would be the only outcome.
