Daughter Lands Plane After Father Collapses

LEBANON, N.H. -- A couple who fell ill while flying their single-engine plane over Laconia earlier this month, forcing their untrained daughter to land the aircraft, died during the weekend.

William Truman died Saturday evening at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. His wife, Diana, died Sunday. A hospital spokeswoman said their daughter, Jennifer, had asked the center not to discuss the cause of deaths.

The couple had been at the hospital since the Aug. 9 incident, where they were brought after apparently being overcome by carbon monoxide shortly after takeoff from Laconia Airport around 4 p.m.

When her father passed out about 15 miles away from the airport, Jennifer Truman contacted the Federal Aviation Administration in Merrimack for help landing.

Officials have said she explained that her father was overcome by carbon monoxide and she needed help landing the plane. As her mother was trying to take care of the father, she, too, was overcome.

The air traffic controller who handled the distress call familiarized Jennifer Truman with the airplane and talked her down.

Very sad news but at least they expired in the Upper Valley, one of my favorite places outside Dixie.

Very sad news.

One has to wonder though - why she wasn't affected? She should have been affected somewhat - yet she still managed to land not having any formal flight training.

74,

The controller that talked her down was a flight instructor and was also familiar with the aircraft. She also did a awesome job landing the aircraft without incident. The story can also be found on our Union web site http://www.natca.net

I had not heard that her parents passed away, it is truly sad that this didn't end the way everyone had hoped.

Saying the story is also on natca.net is probably the same
as saying it is on the internet, without a proper location
nearly useless :(

"One has to wonder though - why she wasn't affected?"

Good question. In the meantime, the daughter revealed to the media that both her parents died of strokes, and not of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sorry, apparently our web site (www.natca.net) has been updated recently so the article is no longer available.
